Listening to music while studying

Why Music Helps Enhance Learning? (For Students in Any Classroom)

Can music enhance the way students are learning in the classroom?

If you ask college students to sing their favorite song when they were in grade 1, most of them will remember every song’s detail. They will also tell the lessons they were learning from the song.

Many researchers have studied the effect of music on learning and several reports say music can be used in the classroom to help enhance learning.

Other reports suggest that students should be encouraged to listen to their favorite music during study time. The benefits of music in learning cannot be exhausted.

Music is motivating

Motivation in learning helps build hope in the minds of the students. They encourage themselves to stay on in a lesson or in a study room because they yearn for something better and greater.

A student may feel like they want to give up or potstone a study for another day. When an assignment is complex, they might feel they don’t have the energy to attempt the assignment. According to research, music motivates students to learn because it creates a sense of reward in their mind.

Music creates a better learning environment

It is difficult to study when the student is stressed. Stress can come from different angles, either from school or home. The student could be lacking some basic learning needs from home or face a harsh school environment.

When they listen to their favorite hit during study, the student feels emotionally supported. They tend to forget the harsh environment in school or the learning needs they have. Music helps them create a better learning environment.

Music helps reduce stress

When school learning activities are compact, the students get pushed and stretched to their limits. Their productivity might decrease when they have too much work to do in terms of lessons, assignments and field activities.

Research reveals that music helps process negative emotions and replace them with positive emotions.

If a student is overwhelmed by schoolwork, they can sit and relax for a few minutes while listening to their favorite music. It will help reduce stress and they can continue working on their assignments again.

Learning under instructors helps a student understand information better. He or she observes the teacher solve a problem and gain knowledge on how to solve it. To help the students learn better, the teacher gives them assignments and sets a deadline.

The structure of academic writing can sometimes be confusing to the student. However, if the student seeks essay writing help from professional writers, they save time. The writer must be able to complete the assignment in time.

Music helps students remember things

A student goes through formal learning for up to 16 years before they graduate with their first degree.

Sixteen years of learning can translate to thousands of information from teachers, parents, society and themselves. It might be difficult to remember much of the information after a few weeks.

Studies have proved that music can help students remember the things they learn. When the main points of a lesson are composed into a song, the student may never forget the points for the rest of their lives.

Students can focus better

A recent study on how music can help improve focus found that music can help the mind grab and process information better. According to the study, the human brain receives information and breaks it down into segments that the person can understand.

The study found that music can help the brain discern situations and predict the result. A student can process a lesson better and analyze the result when listening to music boosts their focus.

Essay writing assistance when you need

Education needs are different and they present themselves at different times. Some require urgent attention, while others need time to address them. The student must seek help from people who will be available to offer support anytime they need it.

Some college essays come with short notices and demand quick attention. The student could be facing challenges with their study time forcing them to seek essay writing assistance from essay writers.

They must be trustworthy and deliver quality papers. Most students trust this essay writing service by Writix as it’s known for its high-level quality and quick deliveries. The work includes thesis, dissertations, essays and term papers.

Music helps build confidence

Every human being longs to succeed in all that they do. The little child in grade one longs to succeed in learning numbers, letters and colors. The situation is the same in high school and university. When the students realize they are not succeeding, they can give up in life.

The benefits of music in learning are many. When a student makes a habit of listening to music, they begin enjoying the benefits like better memory, focus and less stress.

All these benefits combined result in better performance in school. The student becomes confident with themselves that they can make in their studies and perform even better.

Music enhances the relationship between teachers and students

A recent study on the student-teacher relationship in schools reported that at least 30 percent of students feel their teachers do not put any effort into making school a great place of learning.

Teachers can improve by being empathetic, social, and humorous, but they can also add music as a catalyst. Playing music in class creates a relaxed environment where students feel free to interact with the teacher.

There have been conflicting discussions on whether music should be incorporated in the classroom.

Some educationists feel that the classroom and school, in general, might be turned into dancing arenas. Studies and research have proved that the benefits outweigh the negative outcomes when it comes to music and enhancing learning for students in the classroom.

William Leathers is a musical prodigy crowdfunding his way into Julliard

Getting into The Julliard School might be just as hard as threading a needle during an earthquake.

Still, that didn’t stop 17-year-old Canadian synesthete, William Leathers, from applying, killing his audition, and being accepted into the elite undergraduate music program.

Great, right? Yes, but there is still one problem — Juilliard’s tuition is extremely expensive. One thing Leathers could really use right now is some well deserved financial assistance.

His tuition for the four years comes to a whopping $364,000. That’s a lot of guap for a 17-year-old and his parents have only been able to put together $25,000.

So, he should apply for grants and scholarships as most students that get accepted into prestigious universities would do, but nope. As an international student, it’s hard to come by these funds.

I mean the kid is a prodigy. At 7 he was already playing piano for large audiences at World Vision events. We can’t let his talents slip through the cracks. Check him out below.

That was ten years ago and since then Leathers was invited to perform for Jamaica’s former prime minister, P. J. Patterson and has won several music awards.

Now, Leathers sits between a rock and a hard place as he looks to commence his first year at Julliard. He was one of three trumpeters selected this year to the school’s undergraduate program.

In a recent interview with CBC Toronto, he spoke on being the best musician he can be. He said,

“I just want to be the best musician I can be… I want to do well in every genre.”

Leathers has been playing the piano since 4 but once he heard his father, Howard Leathers, practicing the trumpet he fell in love with the brass instrument. Now, that’s a real love for music.

After he begged his mom to allow him to play the trumpet, Leathers received his first one at 7 and the rest was history.

By 12 he was already a part of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TYSO) becoming the youngest musician to do so. Legendary sidenote, he was the only Black musician apart of the TYSO ensemble.

Let’s get it!

Are there any reasons why we shouldn’t lend our helping hand to Leathers? The afrodelic pianist and trumpeter deserves to go to Julliard more than anything.

Besides being an amazing musician the lil’ homie graduated high school two years early with 92 percent grade average. We can’t allow money get in the way of this young Black man’s dreams.

If you’re interested in helping he has started a crowdfunding campaign through the online fundraising website YouCaring.

The goal is to reach $65,000 as Leathers and his family has managed to scrape together $25,000. This is all for just one year of attendance at Julliard.

Thus far the campaign has raised close to $15,000 and counting since Saturday. A donation of any amount helps. Trust the movement and remember you would be helping a real person with a real problem.

You can donate by clicking here. Once you’ve blessed, reward yourself by watching a future GOAT play the trumpet and the piano at the same damn time!

Taco Bell is flexing by giving their employees the education they deserve

Taco Bell’s 210,000 employees won’t just have to focus on filling burritos anymore.

The fast-food giant has partnered with Guild Education in an effort to offer schooling benefits across their entire system.

It’s looking very lit for fast food employees. Earlier this year we found out that In-N-Out gives its managers a $160,000 salary with no college degree.

Now, Taco Bell employees will have access to personalized college advisors and tuition discounts for thousands of classes, certificates and degrees from day one of their careers, according to a press release.

The gifts of education come at the employee’s request. According to Taco Bell’s Global Chief People Officer, Frank Tucker,

“When we surveyed our employees, education support was one of the top three things they asked for.”

This news has Taco Bell employees like…

Taco Bell’s partnership with Guild allowed the fast food giant to “break barriers” and come up with a curriculum that was cost-effective, time-efficient, and academically sound.

The package? All Taco Bell employees, corporate and franchise, will be granted access to the fire educational content.

This includes Guild’s academic advisors, financial aid coaches, and discounts to Guild’s education partners. Lest we mention Guild’s network of 80 online non-profit universities and learning providers that offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

Hold up. So, what about the dough to help Taco Bell employees pay for all of this? The fast-food chain’s taco flippers will have access to $5,250 every year in tuition assistance.

Books and supplies will also be paid upfront and Taco Bell employees can receive college credit for on the job training saving each employee an additional five bands.

How does it feel to get your education sparked by a taco franchise? Pretty damn good.

The franchise plans to grow with their new found belief in educating their employees.

Taco Bell partnered with Guild back in 2017 where they started inspiring employees to take the higher road and obtain an education that would only better them.

Since then more than 2,000 Taco Bell employees have worked with a Guild coach to go back to school. In fact, there was 98 percent retention rate over the course of six months. This was a 34 percent increase over employees not enrolled, according to the press release.

The retention rate and increase will only help as Taco Bell plans to create 100,000 new jobs in the US by 2022 and in 2018 the taco giant plans to open more than 250 restaurants.

Now we see the need for them to attract and retain top talent. Taco Bell is lowkey trying to go global and Guild is about it.

Peep what Guild Education CEO Rachel Carlson said:

“Taco Bell’s ‘Start With Us, Stay With Us’ philosophy aligns perfectly with Guild’s value of giving employees education pathways to advance their careers – both at Taco Bell and beyond in future roles. We’re delighted to help each Taco Bell employee find the right university or program to pursue their education, and our team at Guild will be with them every step of the way as they pursue their academic and career goals.”

I’m definitely down to start with Taco Bell and stay with Taco Bell. They’ve been in the education sphere for some time now.

This Guild partnership is only a bonus to the franchise’s other educational offerings like their Live Más Scholarship and GED programs.

Listen, for those of you looking for a way out this could be the wave. This is a corporation that’s down to support you no matter where you are on your education journey.

Ayye! Taco Bell everywhere.

Viral post of Ghanian teacher using blackboard to teach Microsoft Word inspires all of us

A photo capturing a Ghanaian teacher teaching his students Microsoft Word on a chalk board without a computer has gone viral by showing us to never let a lack of resources get in their way.

Richard Appiah Akoto is a 33-year-old communication technology teacher at Betenase M/A Junior High School in Sekyedumase, Ghana. Despite the fact that the students at Betenase M/A don’t have access to computers, they have to pass a national exam (which includes computer technology) to graduate to high school.

https://www.facebook.com/hottish.owura/posts/1948212815208114

Akoto refused to let his limited resources prevent his students from falling behind kids who are learning with computers. The inventine teacher told Quartz Africa that students in more affluent areas, like the capitol of Accra, have access to computers and will naturally pass the exam easier than his own students:

“Definitely those in Accra [Ghana’s capital] will pass the exam because you cannot compare someone who is in front of a computer, who knows what he is doing with the mouse to someone who has not had a feel of a computer mouse before.”

The teacher further explained that he’s been teaching computer classes on the chalkboard for a while now:

“This is not my first time [of drawing] it. I have been doing it anytime I am in the classroom…I like posting pictures on Facebook so I just felt like [sharing it]. I didn’t know it would get the attention of people like that.”

Akoto’s Facebook post went viral went Teacher Kwadwo, a popular Ghanian comedian, who is also a teacher, shared the picture and encouraged people to help Akoto’s students get access to technology.

https://www.facebook.com/TikyaKwadwo/photos/a.1511402802235705.1073741829.1250802124962442/1944963432212971/?type=3&theater

Then Cameroonian tech entrepreneur Rebecca Enonchong, aka @afrotechie, called on Microsoft to get Akoto’s classroom the proper resources. Microsoft Africa responded that they will help the teacher get what he needs to teach his class:

“Supporting teachers to enable digital transformation in education is at the core of what we do. We will equip Owura Kwadwo with a device from one of our partners, and access to our MCE program & free professional development.”

Akoto is an inspiration to us all and it’s pretty awesome to see that Microsoft has responded to the viral picture by getting the necessary technology to his classroom.

High school students planning #NationalWalkoutDay in protest of gun violence

To say February 14th’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida this past Wednesday was devastating would be a gross understatement.

Devastation isn’t the word. In fact, there are no words.

Yet, words are all we were afforded following the Valentine’s Day shooting. Calls for gun control, pointed fingers at slips in oversight, and your typical political gridlock jargon is all we’ve gotten the past two days.

It seems as if talk is all we as a nation have the guts to do.

Just seven weeks into 2018, there have been eight shootings at US schools that have resulted in injury or death. The 17 slain in Florida has stirred the hearts and rage of many, but unfortunately, it’s nothing new.

Despite making up a meager 5% of the words population, the United States is responsible for 31% of the worlds mass shootings. Just last year in Las Vegas, fifty-eight people were killed and more than 500 people were injured when a gunman took aim at the Harvest Music Festival. It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. We’ve been here before, time and time again and talk is all that has happened.

Well, the kids are fed up.

On Friday, April 20th, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, students nationwide are planning to walkout of their schools. Not to discuss or debate politics, but to peacefully protest, in hopes of making a movement of change.

Using the hashtag #NationalSchoolWalkout, students are aiming to raise awareness and to ultimately unify all high school students across the country to combat gun violence and force Congress to make a legislative change. The group Tweeted yesterday,

“We want students to attend school and then promptly WALK-OUT at 10:00 am. Sit outside your schools and peacefully protest. Make some noise. Voice your thoughts. “We are students, we are victims, we are change.”

Just three days removed from the tragedy, the movement is already receiving support. The Women’s March group, which had successful turnout in each of their peaceful protests, is backing them and using their platform to help organize students across the country, using their hashtag #Enough.

“We need action,” the group said on a website promoting the event. “Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.”

Just like the students who have been moved to action, the women of the Women’s March knows it takes a collaborative effort disrupting everyone’s natural flow to incite real change. Senators, congressman, and political pundits do a great job in vocalizing their concern and offering their thoughts and prayers. But the students want and demand more.

Danielle Hogg, a student and survivor of Douglas High School shooting, put it in words perfectly when speaking to CNN:

“Ideas are great. Ideas are wonderful and they help you get re-elected… but what we really need is action. Please. This is the 18th one this year — that’s unacceptable. We’re children, you guys are the adults. You need to take some action play a role. Come together, get over your politics and work together.”

There’s no more waiting on adults. The future voters of America have spoken and they are demanding change.

The NRA and the pockets they feed may be beyond their reach, but on April 20th, these students are damn sure making sure their voices reach them sound and clear.

Shoutout to Rihanna for raising over $2 billion for global education

By now, it should be evident that Rihanna is far beyond just a music artist.

Her beauty line, Fenty Beauty, has been recognized as one of the first cometic lines to include shades representing all girls of color, she’s a fashion icon, and her contributions to raising money for global education have reached a staggering $2.3 billion to date.

This past Friday (Feb 2nd), the Anti artist attended the inaugural GPE Financing Conference in Dakar, Senegal, where she  spoke and thanked those who’ve pledged and donated. She said,

“We’ve made tremendous progress today, but of course, our work is never done. We have a long way to go. This is a fight we’re never gonna stop fighting until every boy and every girl has access to education.”

This is actually nothing new for Robyn Fenty. In 2016, she was named a global ambassador for education by GPE, and that following February, in 2017, she earned Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year Award for her work through her Clara Lionel Foundation and for constantly promoting education in various parts of the world.

Back when she accepted the award, Rihanna spoke on what being a humanitarian meant to her and why it’s a continued mission.

“We’re all human. We all just want a chance, a chance at life, a chance at an education, a chance at a future, really. At CLF [Clara Lionel Foundation], our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one. Just one. As I stare out into this beautiful room, I see optimism, I see hope, I see the future. I know that each and every one of you has the opportunity to help someone else. All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is a humanitarian.”

GPE’s Financing Conference attracted some of the worlds most renown leaders, including seven heads of state, more than 60 ministers, the President of the World Bank, leaders of UN agencies, civil society organizations, and more, according to Global Citizen.

Most notably, French President Emmanuel Macron, attended the event Friday along with Macky Sall, the President of Senegal.

Although having not released an album in two years and shying away from many interviews, it’s clear Rih is still hard at work.

Nipsey Hussle’s STEM programs aim to ‘bridge gap between inner-city and Silicon Valley’

Compton rapper Nipsey Hussle recently stopped by Big Boy’s ‘The Neighborhood’ radio show to talk about his Too Big To Fail initiative, focused on bringing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs to inner-city and underserved areas.

Nipsey has teamed up with business partner Dave Gross, a real estate developer and entrepreneur who also hails from inner-city LA to develop the program.

The rapper told Big Boy that he wants the program to be a “bridge between Silicon Valley and the inner-city.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BekDeawn0dM/?utm_source=ig_embed

Nipsey and Gross will start their program in Los Angeles, but want to expand across the country to Washington DC, Atlanta, and Baltimore.

The “Too Big To Fail” moniker comes from financial terminology used to describe our biggest banking institutions, but Nipsey and co. are taking that phrase into the inner-city.

The Too Big To Fail website describes their mission and ideology:

“Our inner-cities are ‘Too Big To Fail’, but despite their size and potential, have yet to receive the necessary support.

“Too Big To Fail is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) center and Maker Space that encourages design thinking and innovation in local youth. In partnership with Vector90, we’re creating impact hubs where neighborhood youth can feed off of each other’s talent, creativity, and support.”

This is just the latest in a long list of innovative moves from Nipsey Hussle.

From teaming up with a blockchain tech company to find new ways to monetize his music, to providing a select amount of fans hard copies of his albums, to bringing business to his native Compton, Nipsey Hussle stays trying to find inventive solutions to old problems.

He’s a dope artist, but Nipsey Hussle is also a shrewd mind when it comes to business or social initiatives to better his community.

Shoutout Nip for always pushing the envelope.

This cutting-edge school in England is trying to produce the next tech moguls

A school in Newcastle, England is taking a new approach to education by offering courses with hyper-specific focuses in technology and health science.

North East Futures UTC will open later this week and hopes to give students in the Newcastle region a head start in disciplines that have definitive utility in the modern workplace.

According to Chronicle Live, NE Futures UTC will be open to kids all over the North East of England, which has lagged behind the more cosmopolitan South in careers in technology, the school will offer futures in fields like video game development and cyber security:

“Recruiting students from 14 up from across the North East, it will offer courses tailored for careers in technology (including game development and the lucrative business of digital security) and health science.”

The school will offer normal courses that you’d find in most any high school curriculum, but also give students the opportunity to follow a focus in a subject of their choosing and work alongside professionals in that industry.

Chronicle Live reports:

“Alongside ordinary GCSEs (maths, English and science, as well as the option of a language, art, geography or design technology) students can gain technical qualifications in their preferred area of study. They’ll work independently on projects and develop relationships with people working in industry.”

Head teacher of the school Dan Sydes spoke to Chronicle Live about the goals of NE Futures UTC, claiming that the school immediately positions itself as an attractive option to students in the North East:

“At most we’ll only have about 600 students, but we believe for those 600 this will be the best possible choice. If you have an interest in science or tinkering with computers, we are a great school. We will have a different feel to many schools: longer hours, business dress, great opportunities for work experience – it will be all about getting our students to the right next step.”

This is definitely an interesting new approach to instructing students in this age of technology and mixed media. But one of the biggest issues in those fields is lack of diversity. Mr. Sydes told Chronicle Live that NE Futures UTC is taking on this problem head on:

“We’re all about closing the gap, we have a full range of different backgrounds, and 45% of those signed up already are girls… Maybe where we can have the most impact is raising aspirations and challenging educational disadvantage.”

NE Futures UTC is offering a different lane for students in the North East of England. By taking on geographical and demographic issues in technologies and health sciences, the school could be crucial factor in offering careers in these fields for young students who hadn’t previously had access to them.

LeBron is opening a grade school in Ohio for kids just like him

LeBron James is the King and there’s no disputing that. Don’t @ me either.

Since he entered the league at 18 years old, he’s acted like a grown ass man, mature beyond his years and now at 32 he’s doing something he calls his most important professional accomplishment of his life. He’s opening up a school.

In an interview with Cleveland.com LeBron said,

“Besides having three kids and marrying my wife, putting my mom in a position where she never has to worry about anything ever again for the rest of her life, this is right up there.”

According to ESPN, the King opened up an “I Promise” grade school for at-risk youth in his hometown of Akron, Ohio giving kids just like him a chance to succeed.

In an interview with USA Today LeBron explained,

“This school is so important to me because our vision is to create a place for the kids in Akron who need it most—those that could fall through the cracks if we don’t do something. We’ve learned over the years what works and what motivates them, and now we can bring all of that together in one place along with the right resources and experts. If we get to them early enough, we can hopefully keep them on the right track to a bigger and brighter future for themselves and their families.”

Not many players in the league are making moves like this and for the best of them all to be setting this type of example, hopefully more star players start to step up and do follow suit.

Giving back to the community is always high on the list of priorities for athletes and for LeBron, it looks like he’s just getting started. The school opens in 2018 and students will be chosen through lottery.

According to Bleacher Report,

It will initially include third- and fourth-graders before expanding to first and second grade by fall of 2019, according to Zillgitt. By 2022, the school is expected to include grades one through eight.
