5 rappers who low key made more fire music after getting shot

Young Dolph was reportedly shot in broad daylight this week in Los Angeles.

The Memphis rapper was hit 3 times and is now thankfully in stable condition. This isn’t the first time Dolph has had his life threatened, earlier this year having his bulletproof truck shot at over 100 times before a show.

With this story blowing up all over the internet it’s only a matter of time before those unfamiliar with Dolph start to discover his music.

There is always a light at the end of every tunnel and many other artists who’ve been through this sort of thing can attest to that. What happened to Dolph is a tragedy and he’s definitely in our prayers, but his career is about to explode.

Here’s a list of rappers who managed to get shot and still find a way to come out on top.

50 Cent

50 Cent Laughing GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Obviously this had to be the first person on the list. 50’s story of getting shot 9 times has become hip-hop folklore.

The insane story became apart of 50’s persona and helped drive his gangsta image he was selling.

After the shooting 50 went on to release his classic Get Rich or Die Trying record. The album went certified 6x Platinum and generated over 5 singles.

Since then 50 has made only money moves, his latest being his hit show Power, which is the #2 show on premier cable.

YG

The Bompton born and raised rapper was shot in 2015 at an L.A. recording studio.

Claiming that the shooting must’ve been an inside job, YG started moving a lot more carefully.

A year after the incident he released his album Still Brazy, which touched on the shooting multiple times. With songs like “Who Shot Me” and “Still Brazy” YG managed to drop a personal and gritty project, keeping that L.A. sound alive.

Also shout out to him and Nipsey Hussle for that “Fuck Donald Trump” track.

Fabolous

On October 17th, 2006 Fabolous was shot and arrested all in the same day. The Brooklyn rapper was hit after leaving Diddy’s Manhattan restaurant in a parking garage.

When fleeing the scene Fab and his crew ran a red light and immediately got pulled over by the police. The officers found guns in the car and arrested the rapper.

Less than a year after Fab dropped his fourth studio album From Nothin’ to Somethin’ selling 160,000 copies in its first week. Since then Fab has constantly been on fire being champed as Brooklyn’s favorite rapper.

Cam’ron

Killa Cam has so many legendary moments it’s hard to remember them all. The time he got shot and drove himself to the hospital in a blue Lamborghini is unforgettable. In a failed robbery Cam was hit 3 times while wearing $200,000 worth of jewelry.

When confronted by reporters all he had to say was “I got shot 3 times and my album comes out Nov. 22. It was a sloppy job on their part, they didn’t get anything.”

Cam then went on a full forced beef with Jay-Z and his “Jeans with Chancletas.” This guy is such a fucking legend.

Waka Flocka

When Waka was held at gunpoint in 2010 he kept it gangsta in usual Waka fashion.

While leaving a show, he and his friend were caught in their car with a gun held to their face. Waka told reporters in an attempt to preserve his life he gave up his jewelry though still got shot in the process.  Later that year he dropped his classic debut album Flockaveli.

The album had bangers like “Hard in the Paint” and “No hands” being a launching pad for Waka’s crazy career.

These 8 celebrities are helping Puerto Rico way more than Trump

It’s been a week since Hurricane Maria left Puerto Rico without water and electricity.

The island has been left in devastation with experts saying the death toll could reach into the hundreds. With the island already in the throes of an economic disaster, the storm is bound to make things a lot worse for Puerto Rico.

It seems like most of the country has forgotten that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States. The island is entitled to the same amount of government response as any state.

A week after the disaster, our president chose to spend his time arguing with athletes on Twitter. When he finally decided to address the epic disaster this is what he had to say:

With that unusual response we look to celebrities who are actively working to aid the destroyed island. These 8 celebrities are doing way more for PR than Trump:

Mavericks guard J.J. Barea managed to rescue his family from the island in his team’s plane courtesy of Mark Cuban. The Puerto Rican ball player flew to the island and along with picking up his family, dropped off supplies for his people.

Barea has been posting all over his social media raising awareness for his native country and has raised $100,000 on his “Youcaring” account. While Trump denies requests for a Puerto Rico shipping waiver, this man is taking matters into his own hands.

The Parks and Recreation star posted a link on Twitter to a Generosity by Indiegogo fund. The fund has already raised nearly $500,000 and hopefully will continue growing.

According to the site 100% of the money raised will be used exclusively for long term relief for the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Carmelo Anthony & Lala Anthony

Melo has always been an extremely active member of the Puerto Rican community.

Having his own soccer team out there, it’s clear to see how important his people are to him. In the wake of this tragedy Melo has stepped to the forefront and set up his own personal “Youcaring” page. He has raised over $210,000 so far.

Lala is also doing her best to aid her country by getting involved in spreading awareness to where people can donate.

Both Lala and Melo have family in the country who they haven’t heard from as of yet due to the total lack of power the island is facing.

Future’s engineer and Atlanta hip-hop icon Seth Firkins passes away

Atlanta-based engineer Seth Firkins passed away this weekend. The 36-year-old Firkins, who was Future’s in-house engineer, died in his sleep, the cause is still unknown.

Firkins was a staple in the Atlanta rap scene. Artists from Young Thug to Zoey Dollaz sought out his expertise based on his impressive track record with other musicians. He’s credited on JAY-Z’s American Gangster, Rihanna and Future’s “Loveeeeee Song,” and Travis Scott’s Rodeo.

Most notably, the late engineer was responsible for Future’s DS2, which is arguably one of the best sounding albums ever. From there he’s had a hand in all of Future’s work following DS2, engineering the latest hit “Mask Off.”

Firkin’s impact on the Atlanta scene is one that can never be forgotten. Engineering is usually the least talked about aspect of creating a song but is definitely one of the most important. From Travis Scott to Future, Firkins is responsible for perfecting the sort of crisp, but muddy sound that is so popular today.

Back in July during an interview with Genius, when asked his relationship with music Firkins said,

“A song—and this is the dab talking—is an explosion caused by the combination of talent, timing and vibe.”

When engineering Future’s HNDRXX Firkins told Genius he had to take a different approach to the record, laying out roses in the studio was one of the ways he honed in on the vibe he sought to create.

Since moving to Atlanta in 2006, Firkins gave artists without access to big studios a way to compete. His passion and care for projects earned him back to back #1s and solidified his legendary status. The loss of Seth Firkins is a loss for Atlanta and hip-hop in general.

Ushering in a new and creative approach to the artist’s voice and instrumentals, Firkins will always be remembered for his contributions to the culture.

Rest in Power.

5 pieces of advice from Will Smith on how to live your best life

From the Fresh Prince to Suicide Squad, the Philly-born star has managed to always live his best life. Whenever Will Smith has an interview, he drops gems to help anyone improve their circumstances.

He has three kids who, for as eccentric as they are, are clear examples of Will’s powerful and positive influence. Will Smith also appears to be the most approachable man in Hollywood.

Seemingly humble and positive, he offers a perspective on life that everyone could use. His wisdom is never hidden as he takes every chance possible to spread knowledge.

To celebrate his 49th birthday we’ve put together a guide to living your best life as Will Smith lives his. He’s tackled topics from fear to living unrealistically, so here’s more of his teachings.

Hopefully this’ll change your life and put you on the pursuit to happiness.

“Fear tells you dumb shit”

“I’m motivated by fear… Fear of fear. I hate being scared to do something. I think what developed in my early days was the attitude that, I started attacking things that I was scared of.”

Will Smith believes that fear has no benefit to your life in any situation. Although it may be hard to overcome, defeating fear allows you the ability to feel secure.

When recalling a time he feared skydiving Will said, “You realize at the point of maximum danger is the point of minimum fear… God placed the best things in life on the other side of terror”.

“There are so many people who have lived and died before you you will never have a new problem. Somebody wrote the answer down in a book somewhere. Just the idea that everything you need to know, someone has written it down.

You can’t be scared to die for the truth.”

Whether that truth is your own or someone else’s, it’s best to accept it and not fear it.

“Being realistic is the most commonly travelled road to mediocrity”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBU3qybhTPs

“It just seems like such a ridiculous idea to me to embrace the idea that its not gonna happen or that’s not real for that to happen. As soon as you say it now you just made that real.”

Not pursuing something because it isn’t realistic is the quickest way to stop yourself.

Doing something that can easily be done isn’t worth doing. Realism only factors in current reality but something that hasn’t been achieved yet, can’t be realistic.

“It’s unrealistic to walk into a room and flick a switch and lights come on, fortunately Edison didn’t think so. It’s unrealistic to think you’re gonna bend a piece of metal and fly people over an ocean in that metal. That’s unrealistic. But fortunately the Wright brothers and others didn’t believe that.”

“No matter how talented you are your talent is going to fail you if you’re not skilled”

“Talent you have naturally, skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft. I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented, where I excel is ridiculous, sickening, work-ethic.”

Work beats out talent 100% of the time. When you hear people say “I’m not talented, I’m skilled” it’s to emphasize that point. There are millions of people who will be more talented than you, it’s up to you to outwork them.

“The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is – I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill – if we get on the treadmill together there’s two things – you’re getting off first, or I’m going to die. It’s really that simple.”

“You don’t try to build a wall – you say, I’m gonna lay this brick, as perfectly as a brick can be laid”

“It’s difficult to take the first step when you look at how big the task is. The task is never huge to me, it’s always one brick.

If you get your priorities straight it’s really simple.”

Too often ideas fail because of a lack of planning. The bigger picture is always more attractive, it’s way nicer to imagine a finished project.

Without focusing on the first brick as Will said you’ll always miss a step, winding up lost. “If you do the math ahead of time, its not an issue in the moment.”

“There’s no reason to have a plan B because it distracts from plan A”

“I think that there’s a certain delusional quality that all successful people have to have. You have to believe that something different than what has happened for the past 50 million years of history, you have to believe that something different can happen.”

That delusion that Will mentioned can be dangerous but is oftentimes necessary to overcome the realistic mold.

To double down and believe in yourself is always the first step to success. No one will see it like you when whatever it is you’re working towards is just an idea, but as you push forward it becomes clear.

“I believe that I can create whatever I want to create.

The first step, before anybody else in the world believes it is you have to believe it.”

Truly words to live by.

Big Baller Brand remixes the ZO2 Primes and they’re actually tough

The Baller family continues to ooze nothing but excellence.

After selling $290,000 in pre-orders, Lonzo Ball’s signature sneakers the “ZO2 Primes” prove the Big Baller Brand is only growing. The controversy surrounding the $495 sneaker’s high price is no more, especially after the brand’s recent announcement.

The BBB announced some modifications to the ZO2s that will in turn make it the lightest basketball shoe ever. The “Remix ZO2 Primes” will have better ankle support and will do away with the patent leather. These changes definitely will make the sneaker lighter and more of a true basketball-ready shoe.

For those who already pre-ordered the ZO2s before the remix, you’ll get the updated version instead, for no extra cost. If for some reason you don’t want the better version of the sneaker you can always get a refund and pay a bill or something.

The possibility of refunds isn’t worrying BBB CEO Lavar Ball. He told ESPN, “What happens if you ordered a 2017 diesel and I came out and told you, sight unseen, that I was giving you a 2018 Bugatti for the same price, you wouldn’t ask for a refund.”

In the reveal video for the sneaker, Lonzo is hooping around showing off his new sneaker. While head to toe in BBB clothes it’s only right that the background music is Lonzo’s own track.

Lonzo high-key got bars and a sick ass flow and I’m not sure how to take that. Lines like “Only one year I was done with the Bruins, slaving for free I was offered a movement” got me thinking he might dethrone Dame D.O.L.L.A. (Damian Lillard) as the best rapper in the NBA.

This isn’t the first time he’s blessed a track either, also doing the soundtrack for his brother’s signature sneaker.

Although the sneakers are pricey I can’t hate on what Lavar Ball is doing with his family. Starting a brand from the ground up and keeping almost everything internal, Ball is building a legacy.

The shoes are BIG BALLER, the clothes are BIG BALLER, the music is BIG BALLER!

If you got the bread or wanna skip a meal or 6 go pre-order some Remix ZO2 Primes set to release this November.

J Cole is protesting the NFL and he wants you to do it too

This weekend was pretty wild. Melo finally got traded, ‘Catch me Outside’ girl got a record deal, and the President of the United States got into a Twitter beef with a sports league and its players.

For those unaware, many NFL players have been taking a knee during the national anthem as a form of protest. Colin Kaepernick began sitting out the anthem last season in protest of police brutality. Since then, he’s been blackballed from the NFL, which has sparked many other players to voice their disapproval.

As the NFL season starts, more and more players along with staff have refused to participate in the anthem. Donald Trump apparently took offense, publicly condemning these “son of a bitch” protestors.

Trump called the act disrespectful and even called out the NFL for their low ratings, terrible even…. SAD. With 12 tweets dedicated towards the NFL, it’s weird to think of how little he spoke about literal Nazis walking the streets or Puerto Rico’s current disaster as the island is left with no resources.

Celebrities from all over were coming at Trump’s neck, including Snoop Dogg who had his own response:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BZbn8-7Dk1Z/

Most surprising of the celebs to come forward was J.Cole.

The normally reclusive rapper came on Twitter after months of inactivity with a simple question “How you make a thread”.

After getting his answer, the ‘platinum with no features’ star went on to speak to the American people about the current controversy surrounding the NFL. As he urged viewers to stop watching games, Cole dropped gems on how we can truly make our voices heard.

Suggesting a private investigator look into Kaepernick’s unfair unemployment, Cole wants the former quarterback to receive what he’s owed. It’s clear he’s been thinking critically about this situation for a while and hopes that others will be as passionate as he is on the matter.

Although his Tweets were inspiring, the fact is most people aren’t going to put his words into practice. Habit is a hard thing to break and like Uncle Snoop said “I’M STILL WATCHING N****.”

Peep J. Cole’s thread below where he also took time to acknowledge Cardi B and give her a calm little shout out:

Watch South Park clown Logic’s ‘1-800-273-8255’ song about depression

South Park has never had an issue offending people.

The show has made fun of religious prophets, terrorists, and political figures proving they give no fucks. Last night proved no different when the show decided to parody Logic’s “1-800-273-8255,” a song about suicide and depression.

Due to his classmates making fun of him for being suicidal, Cartman dedicates a song about suicide awareness to himself. “Eric, we don’t want you to die/Eric, give life a try,” Cartman sings running through his school.

https://twitter.com/LivingLikeLogic/status/910712600035553280

Wearing a black hoodie, Eric ended his song with a monologue similar to Logic’s VMA performance. The monologue finished with Eric saying “I am going to kill myself if you all don’t start taking it seriously!”.

Although the topic is sensitive, South Park‘s parodies are always worth watching. Taking advantage of the cheesy nature of the song, South Park clowned Logic’s intentions.

Watching Cartman as Logic hold the mic up to blank stares is hilarious every time I see it. The jokes were in bad taste but all of South Park is in bad taste, it’s what they do.

Angry Eric Cartman GIF by South Park - Find & Share on GIPHY

Depression, suicide, and anxiety are topics that deserve much more attention. Logic’s song has done a great job spreading awareness of depression and many other mental issues even at surface level.

Logic made a very accessible song that while not being incredibly deep has served its purpose in starting a conversation.

Even South Park making fun of it is a sign of how big the song has become in pop culture.

Suicide definitely isn’t a joke and laughing at the South Park episode doesn’t make that any less true.

Cartman is a dickhead, he always has been so let’s just enjoy him doing more dickhead shit for the sake of comedy.

Watch the clip below to see Cartman’s rendition of  Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” and stream the original on Spotify:

Suge Knight still thinks Tupac is still alive somewhere, but he ain’t

Since Tupac’s fatal shooting in 1996 the theory of him being alive has always been thrown around. People have come up with insane theories like the classic, “hiding in Cuba with Elvis.”

The CIA has even been accused of harboring the late rapper as a witness, although they’ve cleared that one up.

Millions of fans still have a hard time accepting Pac’s death. Many celebrities have egged on these theories and now we can add Suge Knight to that list. And, a couple of years ago, TMZ uploaded a clip of Suge Knight revealing to Ice-T that Tupac might still be alive.

The clip TMZ was able to get their hands on comes from an upcoming TV special called Who Shot Biggie & Tupac? The show will focus on Ice-T and Soledad O’Brien as they lead an investigation to uncover new accounts from the fateful night. Ice-T clearly took that Law and Order role to heart.

Ice T GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

In the clip, the Death Row CEO is speaking to investigators over the phone due to his imprisonment after his 2015 hit and run incident. Knight begins his exposition with,

“When Pac died….if he really did, you know.”

When asked what he meant, Suge went on to say,

“When I left that hospital me and Pac were joking… So I don’t see how someone can go from doing well… to doing bad…”

I have to take this as a joke, coming from a 52-year-old facing life in prison. At this point, I’m sure he’s just talking to talk as there’s not much else he could do.

For years the theory that Knight set Tupac up has been one of the more prominent conspiracies by fans. After 20 plus years since Tupac’s death, Knight still finds ways to use the late rapper’s name for entertainment.

Snoop Dogg GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Since Biggie and Pac’s death we’ve seen probably 100 documentaries dissecting their fates.

The question of “who killed Tupac and Biggie” has been ringed out by the media to squeeze every last drop of the situation. The world never got closure on its favorite rappers and is still looking for answers.

The special will air this Sunday, September 24 on FOX.

Adidas takes the #2 spot from Jordan proving hip-hop moves the culture

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, HIP-HOP IS WORLD CULTURE.

From Nelly giving Air Force One’s clout to Jim Jones and Juelz Santana in Ed Hardy, hip-hop sets trends.

Kanye West is undoubtedly the most influential man in music. He made leather joggers a thing and now has helped Adidas achieve greatness.

According to NPD’s sports industry analyst Matt Powell, the German brand has taken the #2 sneaker spot in the U.S. from Jordan Brand. Yeezy deadass jumped over the Jumpman.

Serious Kanye West GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

According to MarketWatch, Nike shares are up 5.3% while Adidas shares are up 31.1% over the same period.

This shift in sneaker popularity shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the industry. Jordan Brand has stood on its clout for years, not having a need for real ambassadors of the brand.

Adidas however was in trouble pre-2014, with Jeremy Scott and A$AP Rocky providing the only conversation surrounding the brand. When Kanye decided to publicly denounce Nike in favor of Adidas every Hypebeast went with him.

https://giphy.com/gifs/kanye-west-yeezy-KClaarADdSsEw

Adidas offered Kanye creative freedom and he turned that into a classic underdog story we ate up. “Fuck Nike,” “Fuck Mark Parker.” Kanye was selling hype and drama in a way that only Kanye West can do.

The Yeezys are the most hyped sneaker ever and the highest valued at $1,876. In a world run by clout Adidas said,

“Not only [have the Yeezy’s] sold out instantly but [they have] also played a major role in propelling Adidas to the most popular sneaker brand on Instagram in 2015.”

I know it sounds dumb but Instagram translates to considerably higher revenue than other social networks. No one was looking out for an Adidas shoe before Kanye blessed them with his name.

https://giphy.com/gifs/yeezys-1wC280snDPqM

Adidas trumping Jordan Brand proves that marketing is everything and quality always comes second. Hip-hop has moved the culture forward ever since RUN DMC had their Adidas and it’ll continue to do so as we stay wavy.

I don’t see Meghan Trainor making any trends outchea.

Pharrell is on his woke shit, gives rousing speech at VH1’s ‘Hip-Hop Honors’

Last night VH1 aired their Hip-Hop Honors award show. The annual event pays tribute to hip-hop’s best and brightest, this year focusing on “90s Game Changers.”

Performances from Missy Elliot and Teyana Taylor brought the 90s to life and honorees like Mariah Carey tied the show together for a nostalgic trip. Amongst all the nostalgia, Pharrell Williams gave a speech with a tone we’ve sadly heard before.

Pharrell took his time on stage to speak on our country’s divided social climate. During his speech Pharrell urged viewers to “open your eyes” and pay attention to what’s going on around us.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JM4X9Dgs_E

Denouncing the sudden rise of white nationalism and hate, Pharrell spoke from the perspective of someone who wants peace. This speech fit into the 90s theme perfectly as it would have been just as relevant 20 years ago.

When addressing those who don’t look like him Pharrell went on to say,

“For everybody else in this country…don’t think because they’re coming at the African-Americans and the Jewish community and the Hispanics that it can’t be you too just because you look like them… The enemy is this divisive mentality, it’s on this side of the wall — it’s already here”.

Without addressing specific moments, Pharrell’s speech was a call to action for not only those who are directly oppressed, but the entire country.

In a country where we have people raising the Nazi flag in honor of hate, Pharrell warns “the white nationalists are walking towards your future — what you gonna do?”

On his “Jon Snow shit” artists like Pharrell continue to make these conversations heard where they need to be.

Earlier this month Williams agreed to take part in a free concert in Charlottesville alongside Dave Matthews Band, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Ariana Grande, and a slew of other A-List artists.

As hate continues to grow in this country Pharrell urges love to grow right next to it.
