It’s an Icy Girl takeover! Why Saweetie will stay at the top of our feeds

The number one Icy Girl, Saweetie is not letting up, honey. I think it’s fair to crown her the “Quarantine Content Queen.”

She’s been consistently providing vibes all 2020 and the pandemic hasn’t slowed her up in the least bit. Her work ethic is giving college all-nighters, listening to this new tribe of rap girls, a new form of inspiration.

Sis is very much tapped in. Most recently, she dubbed herself the Beyonce, the Kelly, and the Michelle with her “Bootylicious” rendition for Halloween. Not to mention her fiercer Mystique look she bodied for the holiday as well.

Ga ahead, Saweetie!

It didn’t take long for “#Saweetaween” to trend either. She won Halloween before the Hocus Pocus marathons even had time to finish. Bey, herself can’t even deny the hot pink slay she served.

She dropped this on the culture just a week after breaking the internet with her rant on Birkin bags. On IG live with Quavo, the Icy Girl decided to impart some gems on the girls on making sure they are dating the right men.

“If he’s not getting you a Birkin, if he’s not paying for your bills, then throw that *** to the streets”

She absolutely stirred the pot with this one and the Twitter + IG streets ate it right up.

https://twitter.com/breesuchabaddie/status/1319674989709148161?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1319674989709148161%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Furbanislandz.com%2F2020%2F10%2F23%2Fsaweetie-gets-backlash-on-twitter-for-saying-real-men-buy-birkin-bags-for-females%2F

This timely speech was definitely foreshadowing the new song she just dropped with Jhene Aiko, “Back To The Streets,” where the Icy Girl details being with the wrong guy and spinning him back to the pavement.

Obviously, the average person can’t afford a $10K bag, especially when the world is in turmoil and the economy is seemingly depleting, but I’m here to speak for the Icy Girl fan club when I say she was clearly not telling chicks to break up with their man if he couldn’t provide that, exactly.

College girls are all about philosophy and it’s very clear she was simply trying to tell the girls to raise their dating standards.

Icy Girls aren’t for the weak-hearted

This is historically the rap girl culture. Lil Kim wasn’t playing when spoke on Chanel 9 boots. She was setting the tone for the Nickis, Cardis, Megans, and Saweeties to come.

We should all be assessing the happiness and appreciation we get out of our relationships based on our unique realities. In the Icy Girl’s reality, Quavo is indeed pushing eight figures, so yes Birkin bags are a sufficient way for him to show his love for his queen.

In short, make sure your king is sufficiently showing his appreciation for what fits within his budget.

If he is not adding to the pot, it might be time to put him up for review.

Saweetie gives more context on her philosophies in an “Icy University” series, where she teaches women how to match their energy and attract the established man they desire.

What more do you want from the number one Icy Girl?

I still remember the first time I heard “Icy Girl” It was an iconic moment in rap girl history for me. It was more than a vibe, it was a mantra, a way of life.

For once, I felt seen. An educated female rapper talking about goal setting?

Then, I found out the good sis Saweetie was not only a college graduate, she went to USC. Dare I add that there is only an 11 percent acceptance rate. AKA, not just ANYONE is getting in.

Whether hardcore rap girls want to give Saweetie her flowers or not? She’s still going to grab the charts. No. 1 on Billboard to be exact. Saweetie is the first and only of her kind.

Get your Birkins, Saweetie!

Don’t forget to vote November 3.

Digital Marketing 101: How the blogger game turned into influencer land

Marketing has undoubtedly evolved from the traditional ads centered around TV spots, radio, and billboards. In fact, mobile marketing is gaining tremendous momentum since the vast majority of people check their text messages at least once a day, which means companies can now send bulk sms text messages.

In order to make the most of mobile marketing, you should implement an adequate strategy. According to DialMyCalls, putting together an SMS marketing strategy will help keep your team members and resources dedicated to achieving a particular goal, whether that be business growth, improved customer service, or successful product launches.

In addition, social media has allowed for an ad to be served at everyone’s fingertips.

I still find it bizarre that the entirety of my career has been based in social media and a majority of my roles were the first in existence. One part of my job that has always been proven to be impactful in driving sales and product awareness has been recruiting bloggers and influencers.

Historically, the most influential celebrities were called on to endorse products (I mean, they still are).

With the consistent evolution of platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, it’s set the stage not only for public opinion but new opportunities for users. Now people can curate themselves as online personalities with the ability to reach millions by simply making a profile.

Having to recruit talent to push products, I’ve seen the game change year to year.

Before, it was all about blogging and aligning with bloggers with the most compelling content. Now, it’s a followers game… mainly on Instagram. The term “blogger” has started to erode and “influencer” is the new buzzword.

Are they both the same thing? Well…yes and no.

Historically, bloggers were known to have their own sites where they published blog form content that they had interests in. Through social media, they were able to promote their content and disperse it to their networks.

Just five years ago, I felt like I had a blogger for everything. Someone who wrote about their personal journey, fashion, celebrity gossip, conspiracies (not Kanye), and fitness. Times were different when XoNecole.com was NecoleBitchie.

These bloggers generated consistent visitors to their sites and this resulted in them having an influence on their audience’s opinions and purchasing habits. They did this through amplifying their online personality.

The blogger world quickly created friction with journalists, who studied to accurately and uniformly publish stories to inform the public. It’s still debatable on who has the street cred in the writing beef. Especially when we’re living in a time where news hits Twitter faster than distinguished outlets (Oh, Ye).

Nowadays, you don’t necessarily need publishers to tell you what’s hot if you already keep up with a blogger that you know (social media know) and trust.

Regardless, word of mouth has always been the most effective form of marketing. You might’ve yawned at a TV ad, but if you saw your friend cop something hot before you, you’d want it too.

If someone you know is standing behind it, naturally you’ll trust it more than the brand itself. It’s not all a mental finesse either.

Some brands truly are made with the needs of a specific demographic in mind. Brand ambassadors just aid in delivering it to the right audience.

Nowadays the term “influencer” is used pretty loosely. Whoever has a notable amount of followers can be considered just that. You don’t necessarily need to have the writing chops and be invited to all the coolest events anymore.

Now, if you can take a lit picture with a product and hundreds-thousands of people like it, then boom, #InfluencerLife.

There are still some out there that are true to the game and are what I call Hybrid Influencers that still maintain their own sites and truly have an affinity for what their focus market is and are careful about what they choose to endorse.

But, there are a lot of folks out there just trying to make click bait without really caring about what they’re endorsing or how they’re endorsing it (there’s a lot of Twerk Bait going on). For marketers, quality has become hard to find. Ultimately, companies love clicks, because clicks confirm product awareness and have potential to turn into buys.

Social media has legit turned sharing into a digital marketplace, where users are promoting themselves and leveraging brands within their shared content to have an impact on their audiences.

There’s literally an avenue for everything and there are still so many areas that still haven’t been touched.

I’ve run campaigns with brands utilizing bloggers/influencers that talked about fashion, music, to diapers (the mommy blogger world is poppin’). I say that to say, no matter what it is if you have a niche perspective/interest on a certain topic, GO IN.

Camera shy? You don’t necessarily have to make it all about you. I’ve seen some really cool pages that are centered around things like food and even cars. (thingspeopledrive.com is an aesthetic, okay?)

Your content can focus on the subject rather if you’re not comfortable showing off a product counter-clockwise around your head.

Everyone has their own unique take and their own special influence. Find your flair, develop a point of view, and promote the heck out of it. Now’s the time!

ProTip: Platforms are embracing content creation. If you have 10K subscribers or more, YouTube will open up their studios to you to create content for the low. May the clicks be with you.

Insecure season 2 is over, but what if Issa, Lawrence and Molly lived in NYC?

With the season finale of Insecure, I couldn’t help but think what would happen if Issa was an East Coast shorty.

I have to say the writing of the show is so candid and true to our culture regardless of location, but New York would provide such a twist in terms of setting.

Cali is definitely a vibe, but I couldn’t help but think that things would have panned out a little differently if Issa was being awkward in the Tri-State. I decided to do some wishful thinking…

Issa would definitely be a BK shorty…

Normally, Issa is wearing a screen tee, a camo jacket, and converses. I wanted to reimagine what her life in timbs would be like.

However, now that she’s single she’s definitely stepped her game up. I can see her being a Brooklyn transplant, commuting to the Bronx every day trying to make a difference. Daniel would probably be posted up at SOB’s for every showcase possible.

I could see Harlem being her and Molly’s playground for sure.

While Lawrence would be typical NYC scumbag…

Lawrence is just so damn emo. I can see him in a beanie reading coding books at the park on his off days.

That moment when he went to get his mail from Issa could have easily translated to him asking to see their shared dog instead.

He’s still sharp in his delivery, so I could definitely see him being a developer for a financial company. Wall Street Lawrence seems appropriate.

“Son, are you deadass?” Can’t you hear him saying that to Issa after finding out about Daniel?

And Molly would be all over the place in the big city!

Molly is coined up and all over the damn place. She’s done everything from a married man to a gay guy. She can’t seem to catch a break with love.

She would fit right into the NYC dating scene. Something tells me she would be at all the mixers being mixy and making terrible life decisions in the Big Apple. Again, she would do so well on the Harlem scene making moves with Issa.

I see her going home to her crib on the water in Edgewater somewhere. Mad comfy. Oh, Molly. You’re so messy, but we embrace that on this side. It’s character building.

Yo, Issa. No shade to the west side. I love seeing Cali life in this light, but if you guys decide to go to NYC, hit up the Hub and we’ll help you out.

Don’t sleep on Cardi B, the BX artist is on the rise and she’s real af

Who is Cardi B?

She captured our hearts for the first time on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop.

She was seemingly unbothered on the show, always cracking jokes and making every moment light-hearted and fun amongst the BS.

Throughout the season, she was working on her career and inciting mild messiness, like most of the love and hip hoppers were.

It’s no secret that a majority of the new “artists” in the franchise hit people more than making actual hits. Dare I say, I didn’t expect much?

We all thought Joseline Hernandez was going to pop first. I mean, she was “married” to Stevie J, who has produced everyone from Diddy to Mariah Carey.

I don’t think anyone saw Cardi coming like this, but in the meantime I was cracking up at her IG videos and enjoying her funny clips off the show.

I’d be lying if I said that “Bodak Yellow” was the first song I heard from Cardi B.

Cardi B Reaction GIF by 2020 MTV Video Music Awards - Find & Share on GIPHY

It was actually “Lick.” I can’t lie, I’m kind of a musical snob. When I’m in the club and everyone starts bopping to a song in unison, I’m reluctant to tag along. There’s a lot of bs out there with good beats.

“Looking like I caught a lick. Run up on me, you get hit. All my b*** with the s***. ”

At first, I’m like damn these lyrics are a bit graphic coming from a female. Okay, I’m looking like I caught a lick. I guess that meant I look good. Okay, I love looking good.

Hold up, what does “lick” actually mean? According to Urban Dictionary:

Urban Dictionary

I’m a black girl from the ‘burbs, you know? We love some good trap music. It’s our culture.

But, we also like to keep it cute.  I counted it out as being “too hood for me” in true bad and bourgeious fashion. (Even though I can be captured often listening to the likes of 21 Savage, Kodak Black, and Young Dolph.)

For some reason, it’s different when it’s coming from a girl. Don’t get me wrong, I love Remy Ma, who is also from the Bronx and rough in her delivery, but the narcissist in me was drawn to her off “Conceited.” I like Nicki Minaj too despite the hype, but she always kept that sassy flair going that kept me interested.

I didn’t give Cardi a real chance with my ears off the chorus on “Lick” alone and her Love & Hip Hop resume. I wrote it off in my head as filth, encouraging chicks to beef and fight. At this point in my life, I’m much more into feeling like I’m prime rib and motivated to get my coin.

Then…I heard Bodak Yellow. It was like…a bad bih hymn.

“I don’t gotta dance, I make money moves.”

I thought to myself. I make money moves. I go to dinner and cop the steak. I see people and don’t speak. I don’t know a chick that works as hard as me. OMG I *AM* CARDI B!

When music gets in your soul, you simply can’t control yourself. I started to feel Cardi B on a spiritual level. My head started knocking and I couldn’t stop it.

Then, I started pointing to an imaginary hater. The hook, hooked me. Before I knew it, I had my hand up to the sky mimicking the lyrics and lining my hands up, making invisible rows in front of me. These were all the signs of a hit song.

This is the effect Cardi B has. It took me some time and watching her interviews to realize she was just speaking her truth all along.

We all had to connect with her in our own way. I actually just had an argument with some chicks from Brooklyn on whether or not she has a speech impediment. We came to the conclusion that she’s simply Caribbean and from the Bronx, she was destined to talk with her tongue. (Sorry in advance to my cousins out on Fordham Rd.)

“Bodak Yellow” instantly became the Summer ‘17 anthem. Every event I went to, Cardi had everyone locked in.

Cardi B Gangster GIF by 2020 MTV Video Music Awards - Find & Share on GIPHY

It was everyone’s background music on their Snapchat. I even caught guys riding around blasting it. It was no surprise to me that it went certified gold.

Not only did Cardi get the gold hardware, she got the praise too. She performed at the VMAs, I caught her on the Wendy Williams Show performing on her birthday episode, and Drake brought her out during his OVO Fest in Toronto. Migos, and her dude Offset, invited Cardi to their Veld Festival. To say the least, everyone wants a piece.

I’m not afraid to say I was wrong about sis, but I won’t be sleeping on Cardi anymore. You shouldn’t either. She might just chill with your boo.

How Aaliyah solidified herself as a cultural icon at 22-years-old

It was her beauty that captivated us, her mystique that made her unique, and in the end, her influence that made her a musical icon.

At the age of 22, with Aaliyah’s star on the rise to supernatural heights, she succumbed to a tragic plane crash. It’s odd to think it’s been sixteen years since the passing of the critically acclaimed R&B princess.

In such a short time, she’d accomplished what takes some their whole lives to conquer.

Known for her infamous side swoop covering her face along with her forward lyrics and sensual delivery, it was no question that she was indeed an R&B sensation.

Niece of the legendary Gladys Knight, Aaliyah got her first break at only 11 years old singing on-stage with her aunt. She was managed by her uncle Barry Hankerson of Blackground Records, who had a hand in the careers of R.Kelly, Ginuwine, Timberland, and Missy Elliot.

She went on to garner 2 Grammy nominations, produce 3 hit albums, and act in high profile movie roles, including Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned.

Her fearlessness when it came to fashion made her a muse for years to come. Before Rihanna had Fenty, we had Aaliyah.

She emerged toting dark lipstick, overalls, a bandana, and dark shades in her debut single “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number.”

Her tomboyish look paired with her angelic voice and sensuous lyrics gave her a memorable flair.

Essentially she was singing love songs in timbs and jerseys. Yeah, lit. No, SZA wasn’t the first.

She exhibited a certain confidence in her performances and a sureness in her singing and lyrics at a young age. She quickly became the poster child for renowned brands like Tommy Hilfiger, which included styles that are rapidly circling back around today.

Her tomboy repertoire subtly turned sexier over time. Her shades came off and her bang came through. She popularized streetwear in a lustful way and was among the fashion trailblazers of the ’90s.

Baggy jeans with bra tops, oversized sweatshirts, bandanas, and bucket hats were just some of the staples to her progressive attire. Her swag is often duplicated today. As “new” trends continue to emerge, we’re often reminded that Aaliyah did it first.

She formulated a timeless fusion of street chic. Her style was so pivotal to the culture, 16 years later, MAC cosmetics just announced the launch of an Aaliyah inspired lipstick collection after a Change.org petition led by her fans and backed by her brother, Rashad, garnered 26,000 signatures two years ago.

She’ll join the likes of Selena Quintanilla who was also honored with a posthumous collection with the company.

The only phrase to use when it comes to Aaliyah’s style and sound is “well ahead of her time.” She started off producing music with rumored ex-husband, R Kelly.

The legitimacy of their marriage is still in question today, she was 15 while Kelly was 27 at the time, but the marriage license claims that she was “18.”

After her parents demanded her departure from R.Kelly, she explored other avenues. She ditched her black shades for her swept bangs, and created a futuristic blend alongside producers Missy Elliot and Timberland.

Her music is still setting the vibes and relevant today despite the nearly two decade time lapse.

Whether she was coming with ballads like “One In A Million,” or soulful selections like “Are You That Somebody,” she had an undeniable range. It kind of sucks her songs aren’t available on any streaming services.

Her uncle is sitting on her digital discography in hopes of protecting her legacy, but fans worry that it will only harm her memorial efforts.

via GIPHY

The biggest colloquy in the loss of Aaliyah is the constant debate on what she would have and could have been.

Seeing stars that came up in the same era is her makes it overwhelming to think about how far Aaliyah would have gone knowing how much she’d already done.

With her dating Dame Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, at the time of her death, it’s only natural that the comparisons involving Jay-Z and Beyonce come up often.

via GIPHY

Her death directly after the completion of the her self titled album, Aaliyah, and the filming of her video for the same project leads me to wonder… did she simply fulfill her destiny?

Luckily, we have the remnants of her legacy to rest on and a bunch of artists coining her as their inspiration that she will continue to live through.

I’m one of many hoping her uncle comes up off her unreleased music.

The world deserves to hear all of her art. RIP Babygirl.
