Stories of the week: Quarantine Radio, Bernie out and more

The virus came. And the virus conquered. Much of the civilized world is in chaos, and news unrelated to COVID-19 is few and far between.

That is except for the entertainment sector, of course, which operates on a separate plane from everything else. In a distant world where clicks are currency, and clout is monetary.

Girls twerking on IG live and famous rappers commenting on it? Kept.

Big nasty slug of a once-movie mogul charged with additional charges? In 2019 he was left.

Our favorite politician putting his campaign on hold? Of hope we are bereft.

These are just some of the stories that popped up this week relatively unrelated to COVID-19. We wanted to go more in-depth on each issue and review some stories that don’t have to do with the pandemic.

Always remember: LeBron James works hard, but the entertainment world works harder.

Tory Lanez – Quarantine Radio

We all know how popping Tory Lanez has gotten IG live.

Other celebrities virtually pulling up, shots of liquor and air horns, girls twerking while he watches and hypes them up.

Have no fear, Quarantine Radio is back! The Canadian artist convinced IG to lift the ban after just two days (normally bans last for seven).

Plus, his new mixtape “The New Toronto 3” is out, and the content that he is going to produce on Quarantine Radio is only going to get better. Tory Lanez, maybe not the King we deserved. But definitely the King we all needed.

Harvey Weinstein

This old shmuck again, huh? I know, I know, let’s leave this man in 2019. And ok, yeah, “old shmuck” is too kind of a term for this oily, wrinkley, nauseating, portly snail.

But this is negative news for Weinstein; thus, positive for literally everyone else.

Los Angeles prosecutors today filed a new charge against the aforementioned lazy-eyed clown. These charges stem from an alleged assault at a Beverly Hills hotel room in 2010. Weinstein is already awaiting extradition to Los Angeles for four other charges.

Ah 2010, in the days before the Me Too movement, where you were protected by your friends and enablers and free to roam around and terrorize, assault, or rape whomever you wanted. Sick f***.

Well now it’s 2020, and ohhh the times are a-changing. When it rains it pours.

Our favorite OG, Bernie Sanders, called off his campaign this week, seeing no logical path to the democratic nomination. He has committed to continue fighting for the progressive ideals that he always has. The ideals and rights that COVID-19 have shown any willing observer are absolutely necessary for every American citizen.

Somehow, in 2020, Bernie’s progressive views are still not enough to secure the nomination.

Our dear Bernie, we have failed you yet again.

NBA Young Boy – Kodak Black

NBA Young Boy and Kodak Black have been trading shots on social media this week.

This week, Iyanna “Ya Ya” Mayweather was reportedly arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after she allegedly stabbed the mother of YoungBoy’s child, Lapattra Lashai Jacobs.

Kodak Black entered the conversation by commenting on a celebrity gossip post. He said, “The hell they mean fully cooperated LOL. They ain’t say a lil piece bit, they say fully big. Anyways, man that word ain’t even posed to be attached to your name,” in reaction to hearing NBA YB was cooperating with the police.

NBA YB responded, not mincing words. “I ain’t never paid attention to a nigga, especially not from no motherfucking cell,” he said. “The fuck a nigga watching me for? A nigga say I cooperated about what? You stupid bitch?”

The next day, YB and Black went back and forth on social media. This is bigger than fishing for attention. These two are certainly not fans of each other.

When we need a break from all things COVID, we turn to the entertainment sector. Musicians, disgraced celebrities heading to prison, fu** it, even our favorite politicians.

Here’s a recap of some of the best roasts from the Democratic Debates

After two months of two-day debate circuses, featuring 10 candidates on-stage, it’s time to look forward to the next round, where the qualifications are much stricter. To make the stage in September, candidates must have 130,000 donors and be polling at 2% in four polls.

That spells the end for many campaigns, including Marianne Williamson’s, who spoke about “dark psychic forces” released by Donald Trump, but made surprisingly good points about reparations and the Flint, Michigan water crisis.

Girlfriend, you were so on..? It also means trouble for low-polling candidates like Kirsten Gillibrand, who closed the last debate by asking for people to help her “so I can make the next debate stage.”

Only seven candidates have qualified so far, including Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke and Cory Booker. Others who might qualify are Amy Klobuchar, Andrew Yang, and Julian Castro.

In honor of these debates ending, let’s take a look back at some of the best moments and burns, in no particular order:

1.  “I don’t know why someone would go through all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for” – Elizabeth Warren

Many of the moderates on-stage Tuesday tried to paint Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s policies, such as single-payer healthcare, as impossible dreams and fodder for Republicans.

Warren, clearly frustrated with their lack of imagination and forward-thinking, responded. After this, Delaney’s Wikipedia page was briefly changed to “murdered by Elizabeth Warren during the July debate.”

2. “I wrote the damn bill!” – Bernie Sanders

Directed at Tim Ryan, who asked the Senator what Medicare for All would mean for unions.

While Bernie explained that union members would benefit, since Medicare for all would cover hearing aids, dental care and other services for seniors, Ryan responded, “You don’t know that.” Ryan definitely felt the Bern after that one.

3. “You’re wrong.” – also Bernie

Bernie easily dismissed another Medicare for All critic — this time John Delaney, who claimed the plan was “political suicide” — with a simple “you’re wrong.”

4. “That little girl was me.” – Kamala Harris

A game-changer for her campaign.

In the first Democratic debate, Senator Kamala Harris announced that she wanted to talk about race, and began a (clearly prepared) story about how she was bussed to school growing up.

She then turned to Joe Biden and pointed out that he had opposed the policy during the Civil Rights era. The former VP was caught completely off-guard, and the exchange cemented her status as a front-runner.

It also put a target on her back, making her vulnerable to attacks during the second debate.

5. “We’re up here with make-up on our faces and our rehearsed attack lines, playing roles in this reality TV show.” – Andrew Yang

Calling out the debates for the artifice that they really are. The “rehearsed attack” line instantly made me think of Kamala’s Biden attack last debate.

But it could also refer to Tulsi Gabbard’s attack on Kamala, or Bill de Blasio’s attempts to goad Biden into responding, or Julian Castro’s surprise critique to Beto O’Rourke on immigration.

It paints a really scary picture of American politics — and I think he’s right.

6. “You’re dipping into the Kool-Aid when you don’t even know the flavor” – Cory Booker

Whether or not people actually say this, it gave the Senator, who’s been solidly mid-tier this election cycle, his breakout moment. It came during an exchange with Biden, while the two sparred over their criminal justice records.

Analysts praised Booker’s performance, proclaiming he won that night of the debates.

7. “Girlfriend, you are so on.” – Marianne Williamson

Not a burn, but definitely one of the funniest things I’ve seen — not just on the debate stage, but on TV in a long time.

Asked what her first action as President would be, the self-help guru said she would call up the Prime Minister of New Zealand, to tell her she was… on?

At the moment, I genuinely thought this was a compliment to another female leader. Like, right on, girl!

But apparently, the New Zealand PM had promised her country would be the best place for children to grow up, and Williamson was preparing to compete for that spot.

8. “The first thing I’m gonna do is Clorox the Oval Office.” – Kirsten Gillibrand

I have to respect this answer: you gotta get the Trump disease out of there ASAP.

And now all I can think about when I say “ASAP” is Trump tweeting, “It’s been a Rocky Week, get home ASAP A$AP.” Great.

‘The Redemption Project’ will change our perspectives of inmates in society

Van Jones shared the first look to his new series ‘The Redemption Project’ today. A project he says has changed his life.

CNN will premier The Redemption Project Set this upcoming Sunday at 9 pm ET.  Offering a different perspective other than the one that’s long been accepted of convicted felons, the show looks to change the conversation. Van Jones said in the show’s promo,

“The redemption project is an attempt to see what happens when people who have done really bad things, but want to make amends, sit down with the people whose lives they’ve ruined.”

“I got a chance to see just Olympic levels of moral courage on both sides of those conversations. Parents who have lost kids walk into a prison and sit down and talk to the person who took their kids’ life. Who can do that? I am a different person having been a part of it,” Van continued.

Prison reform is a hot button issue in America. Still, it hasn’t received nationwide support in mass abundance until recent and one could say Meek Mill getting locked up for riding a dirt bike back in 2017 was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Two years ago police hauled the Philly rapper off to prison after the citation violated his parole. Unfortunately, it’s hung over his head since he was a teenager. In response, the hip-hop community, including the likes of Jay Z, came together to fight the case.

Additionally, the teamwork brought awareness to the hundreds of thousands who are in prison due to petty charges like the one Meek was caught up with.

Meek even teamed up with billionaires, like Robert Kraft and the Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin, to form a coalition called the Reform Alliance. The initiative’s objective is to break cycles of probation. Similarly like the case of Meek Mill, the Reform Alliance wants to put a stop to the parole violations that plague this country (Van Jones is apart of this as well).

Even Kim Kardashian got into prison reform. She successfully lobbied President Donald Trump to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson. She was serving a life sentence on a nonviolent drug charge committed in 1996. Now she’s studying for the bar to do much of the same work.

Now, prison reform is arguably the number one issue for Americans and a point Presidential hopefuls are making a stand on as they make their case for 46.

Last night, during CNN’s town hall, Senator Bernie Sanders was not shy about hopping on the bandwagon of prison reform. He controversially stated that we should give Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev the right to vote. Although he is in federal prison.

“I think the right to vote is inherent to our democracy. Yes, even for terrible people, because once you start chipping away and you say, ‘That guy committed a terrible crime, not gonna let him vote. Well, that person did that. Not gonna let that person vote,’ you’re running down a slippery slope,” he said.

Conversely, Indiana presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg’s answer temporarily went viral. He articulated that incarcerated felons should not have voting priveledges.

Either way, to say our prison system needs revisiting is an understatement. It’s just a matter of changing public reception, which is what Van Jones hopes to do.

Karma is a bitch: Gun Girl gets kicked out of Bernie Sanders town hall in Ohio

This past weekend, the conservative shock-value journalist, Kaitlin Bennett, — otherwise known as ‘Kent State Gun Girl’ — was escorted out of a Bernie Sanders town hall before it even started.

When Bennett asked why she couldn’t stay and watch, the official said that it was “invite only.” “No, it’s public,” Bennett responded. “On his website it says public.”

The event has since been taken off the Sanders’ “Hear the Bern” Facebook page, but the local station, Fox 8 Cleveland, reported that it was free and open to the public. Entrance to the town hall was provided on a first come, first served basis, according to Fox 8.

“This is an event that we paid for. This is an event — we bought this space,” the campaign official explained to a protesting Bennett in the video. “I’m going to ask you one more time,” he said, before threatening to turn the matter over to security.

“Can someone tell me what I did?” Bennett asked as she was being escorted out of the building. “I need to know what rules I violated.”

In response, the officers told her that it was a private event thus making it private property and Kaitlin wasn’t amused.

“So what we just saw was Bernie Sanders’ campaign discriminated against a certain journalist. Those people recognized me,” she said. “I am a woman journalist and I got ejected from a Bernie Sanders town hall event. I’m not allowed to report on it, I’m not even allowed to listen to Bernie.”

Gun Girl got her name for carrying around a semiautomatic weapon. Her savagery followed the shooting and killing of four unarmed students on her campus of Kent State a couple of years ago, so she’s probably right.

Instead of advocating for a ban on semiautomated weapons and stock guns, she started the hashtag #CampusCarryNow. Now Kaitlin is the grassroots director of Liberty Hangout and has written for the political tabloid Infowars.

Bernie and his team may not have been right in handling the Gun Girl situation, especially if it was advertised to the public. Still, she knew she wasn’t there in good faith. Additionally, something had to be done for this antagonizer of peaceful spaces.

To say that today’s politics are divisive would be an understatement. Especially, how both sides of the aisle have shaken out since 45 assumed office.

While we’re undoubtedly living in the most progressive social state ever, the instantaneous information and the unmitigated confidence the internet has given us has brought forth the ugliest from all sides.

The Southern Poverty Law Center reports a dramatic increase in the number of white nationalist groups in the U.S., from 100 chapters in 2017 to 148 in 2018.

Also, the Anti-Defamation League reports a 182 percent increase in incidents of the distribution of white supremacist propaganda, and an increase in the number of rallies and demonstrations by white supremacy groups, from 76 in 2017 to 91 in 2018.

America is not as divided as it was during slavery, but now we’re aware the hate hasn’t left and, more importantly, where it’s hidden.

Kent State girl is just a manifestation of this.

Whether or not she has a case against the town of Ohio or if she’s taking action is unknown but I think it’s safe to say she got exactly what she wanted.
