Porn star August Ames commits suicide, shows a sad side of the industry

August Ames, 23-year-old porn star who’d appeared in over 280 adult films and was nominated for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 AVN awards, was found dead yesterday in her California home, through asphyxia by hanging.

Ames committed suicide after battling depression for years.

She had recently received some Twitter backlash over controversial tweets about a co-star who had shot gay porn. It started when Ames tweeted what she believed to be an important warning to a fellow female porn star who would be replacing her in an Erotica X scene.

Shortly after the tweet went up, Ames was hit with claims of being homophobic.

The pornstar shut down accusations of homophobia, defending her opinion over the tweet, “I am NOT homophobic. Most girls don’t shoot with guys who have shot gay porn, for safety,” she wrote, “That’s just how it is with me. I’m not putting my body at risk, I don’t know what they do in their private lives.”

The star was openly bisexual, starring in plenty movies with other women.

Some people quickly came to her aid.

August hasn’t been a stranger to depression. In an Unfiltered Holly Randall podcast, the adult film star was very open about her sexually abusive past, the distant relationship she had with her father, and her constant struggle with depression.

“I get very depressed. I can’t get out of bed, I have to cancel my scenes for a week or two.”

Her mother was diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and multiple personality disorder later on in life. August, whose bubbly personality on and off the screen is equally infectious, had been diagnosed with the same disorders.

When she was unable to control her depressive tendencies, specifically when she hadn’t taken her medication, something as simple as getting out of bed became impossible.

“I was diagnosed as bipolar and depressive, and multiple personality disorder, so I take medication for that, too. It was so hard when I wasn’t on any medication, when I would just flip. It was crippling. I couldn’t get out of bed, everything had to be perfect around me, if there was a crumb on the floor, I would go apeshit. I would just throw myself in bed, I wouldn’t shower.”

The adult star’s death brings up the question of where we draw the line with who women choose to share their bodies with, especially with the recent #MeToo movement sweeping our nation.

It’s a very sad day for the adult film industry and Ames’ following.

Her husband, adult film producer Kevin Moore, has asked to be left alone at this time of his wife’s untimely death.

“She was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me. Please leave this as a private family matter in this difficult time.”

RIP August.
