#ICEBae: Who is the baddie distracting us from the migrant detention centers?

We know about the kids in cages. We know it’s terrible and so does our administration. Our administration also knows that America loves a good distraction in the form of sexuality.

The officer was providing security for Vice President Mike Pence during his recent border visit. She’s now known as #ICEBae for her attractive appearance.

Kiara Cervantes is a 26-year-old customs officer based in Texas. Some users attacked her on Twitter stating “shame on any Hispanic working for ice of anything of that nature.”

Cervantes responded, “I think that’s really rude and naive of you to say. You have no idea who my parents are and no idea what goes into my job on a daily basis… before speaking on something you know nothing about…. DONT. Regardless I’m blessed and thankful for the career I have.”

Here’s the thing tho, ICE Bae doesn’t matter. Cervantes doesn’t really matter to the kids in cages. She doesn’t matter to the thousands detained in concentration camps. She doesn’t matter to the state of our immigration system. She’s just a distraction. And a disappointing misogynistic one at that.

The real outrage should not be towards one customs officer. Her Latinidad makes for juicy gossip, but that does not mean she has anything to do with the system and powers that made the concentration camps possible.

We should, instead, be focused on how the law allowed for this. How our representatives allowed for this. Retweeting AOC’s testimonials is not enough. Call your representatives.

Tell them to close the concentration camps. Research what social workers, the ACLU, immigration organizations say needs to happen in order to support the release and rehabilitation of the detained. Those of you can vote, vote in local elections as well as state and national based on that research.

You can compare #ICEBae to a Nazi all you want, but as the common people, we are the ones who must stop fascism from happening.
