‘Nipsey Blue’ really could (and should) be Crayola’s newest crayon color

“Nipsey Blue” could very well be the official name of an actual Crayola Crayon.

Yesterday talks of such became trending as Twitter was ‘doing its thing again’, this time harnessing its power to convince Crayola to name the new shade of blue in honor the late Westcoast rapper.

Back in 2017 Crayola asked its social media followers for help naming a new blue crayon, but due to recent misfortune, Nipsey Hussle’s friends and fans, including Los Angeles Lakers’ star LeBron James, are pushing for the name “Nipsey Blue.”

The Grammy-nominated rapper, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was shot and killed outside his Los Angeles clothing store earlier this month. At the time of his death, he was planning to meet with Los Angeles Police Department officials to fight gang violence in the city and was also working on many other projects to rebuild his hood.

To say Nipsey Hussle’s presence was heavily felt and now sorely missed is a vast understatement. And, in result, the tributes have been in abundance.

Murals of theVictory Lap rapper can be found in almost every major city across America. The intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue was renamed Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom Square in his honor. And Oklahoma City Thunder star Russel Westbrook dropped 20-20-20 as a tribute — a nod to Nip’s Rollin’ 60s.

This doesn’t include the tremendous outpouring, sold-out funeral at Staples Center and a memorial outside of his store that shut down an entire block.

Now, his legacy has a chance to further be solidified in history as Twitter users are not joking about renaming a blue crayon in honor of the late rapper.

Some variations suggested include “Marathon Blue,” “Blue Laces” and “Crenshaw Blue.” Fans have also suggested the company should donate a portion of the proceeds to STEM programs for inner-city children, a cause close to the late rapper’s heart.

The only issue is that Crayola asked for help renaming the color back in 2017 — two years ago.

The shade ultimately went on to be called “Bluetiful,” beating out “Dreams Come Blue,” “But Moon Bliss,” “Reach for the Stars” and “Star Spangled Blue.” However, that doesn’t necessarily that mean the conversation shouldn’t be revisited.

Crayola and their committee picked “Bluetiful” recent enough and the matter important enough for some amendment to be made.

Despite the media attention and everyone making “Nipsey Blue” a point of discussion yesterday, it’s unclear if they’ll budge. Not that Nipsey needs the nod, there’s just a legitimate case to be made here.

Crayola has not made a statement since the recent press and it’s unclear if they will. One thing is for sure, though: the real ones know what to call that shade of blue from not on, regardless of how it reads.
