With that in mind, we’ve got you with some heat to carry you through this Halloween weekend and keep you vibing deep into the night in your dumbass costume.
It was a dope week of hip-hop and R&B releases, let’s take a look at what we got on the menu.
Ty Dolla $ign – Beach House 3
Ty Dolla $ign’s second album Beach House 3 was well worth the wait. Dolla has become one of the go-to features in the hip-hop game.
He brings a little R&B swag to any track, and on his own project, Ty flows effortlessly over a collection of beats from fire producers (and himself)
He’s joined by the likes of Future, Swae Lee, Jeremih, Pharrell, Damian Marley, Skrillex, 24hrs, and more on this impressive collection of soulful bangers. With 20 tracks, all of which could make an appearance at the club, Ty has put some serious work in on BH3.
Although Ty has been in the game for a minute, BH3 certifies his place as one of the best purveyors of trappy R&B.
Big K.R.I.T. – 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time
Big K.R.I.T. has been a darling of hip-hop heads since his 2012 album Live from the Underground. Krit’s Mississippi drawl and his soulfoul, bouncy production make him a pretty individual artist. He’s always been a breath of fresh air as much as the game has changed over the half decade since Krit has been around.
4eva Is A Mighty Long Time is classic Krit. He’s cheffing up fire beats, spitting some real shit, and bringing on legends like T.I., Lloyd, and UGK (RIP Pimp C) onto the project. It’s a meticulously-crafted project with two sides (although with digital streaming so prominent, not sure that was necessary).
Krit is definitely a retro southern rapper with a much different sound than the trap wave that has taken over. “Ride Wit Me” and “Higher Calling” are perfect examples of Krit’s individual style. Dude has the sauce.
K Camp – Slum Lords 2
K Camp is another ATL rapper doing the damn thing. He dropped his RARE mixtape exactly a year ago and released K.I.S.S. 4 in March of this year. K Camp has a sing-songy, boppy delivery that will have you bobbing your head along to his bouncy jams.
If you’re tryna listen to some solid, fun hip-hop that’s not gonna ask too much of the listener, throw on this K Camp.
Majid Jordan – The Space Between
Majid Jordan, the duo comprised of Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, seemed like the next big stars out of Drake’s OVO label when they helped craft Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home” in 2013.
I heavily fucked with the duo’s EP afterhours, which displayed a lack of focus but also a wild versatility of cool dance music, drawing from a wide array of different genres.
But this recent album, and their official debut Majid Jordan, have failed to live up to their lofty potential. The Space Between is an uninteresting collection of smooth production and lyrics that don’t say much of anything.
“One I Want” with PARTYNEXTDOOR is fun, “Body Talk” is solid, but for the most part, The Space Between doesn’t do anything overly exceptional. It feels like while Majid and Jordan have tried to focus their sound, they lost some of what made them an interesting group in the first place.
Migos – “Motor Sport” (ft. Cardi B & Nicki Minaj)
Oof. Migos have enlisted the two hottest women emcees in recent memory for “Motor Sport” as they vibe over a Murda Beatz production.
Cardi B, Offset’s girlfriend, is definitely a highlight as she namedrops her boo and proclaims herself the “trap Selena”. We ain’t arguing.
This could be the beginning of the Culture 2 rollout, which would be fucking awesome.
PnB Rock – “Issues” (ft. Russ)
Philly crooner PnB Rock stops by to drop “Issues”, a nice lil’ track in which PnB admits that he’s got some problems. Russ brings his corniness to the track, so that’s cool I guess.
PnB also announced his album Catch These Vibes will drop on November 17th. This will definitely be a dope R&B drop. PnB doing his thing.
Jeezy – “Cold Summer” (ft. Tee Grizzley)
Teaming up with Tee Grizzley, Jeezy dropped “Cold Summer” out of nowhere. It’s a banger in the classic Jeezy style, with Jeezy’s gravelly voice boasting over a menacing piano-driven beat and .
Bringing in Tee Grizzley is a pretty dope move from Jeezy. Griz is definitely on the rise after “First Day Out” from earlier this year.
One would assume this is the first drop off a bigger project from Jeezy, but there’s no announcement about an album as of yet.
The Game – “Oh I” (ft. Jeremih, Young Thug, Sevyn)
The Game teamed up with Jeremih, Young Thug, and Sevyn for this beach club-appropriate song “Oh I”.
It’s a groovy little track, not exactly typical of Game’s catalog, but definitely could be a nice cuff jam as we officially move into Cuffing Season.
