Music week in review: Lana Del Rey, Meek Mill, Tyler, the Creator, and more

It’s too hot to not be listening to some great music this weekend.

Here’s what you need in your life right now.

Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life

America’s favorite sadgirl sweetheart has returned to deliver some great summertime depression music.

While you plebeians will want to “have a good time” or “party” or “listen to something that makes you happy,” Lana has the sadness bars on deck.

Lana is not alone though. She’s got some solid, and kind of random, features from A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Stevie Nicks, and Sean Ono Lennon.

If you’re trying to cry on the beach, Lana has you covered.

Meek Mill – Wins & Losses

It’s safe to say Meek Mill has taken a couple L’s over the last couple years. He started beef with Drake over supposed ghostwriting allegations and then the MMG wildcard got publicly dumped by Nicki Minaj.

Meek’s new album can be happily sorted into the *win* column.

The Philly rapper supplies his screaming emoji bars over a fire collection of knocking beats. Meek has returned from the death. We couldn’t be happier.

Tyler, the Creator – Scum Fuck Flower Boy

After becoming known as the ultimate shock rapper since exploding onto the scene with “Yonkers,” Tyler, the Creator has significantly switched it up on his latest release.

He’s grown a lot as an artist and as a person. Flower Boy is the ultimate representation of that growth.

Musically, Flower Boy is incredibly smooth, jazzy, even laidback. Lyrically, Tyler talks about love, his sexuality, and seems less conflicted and upset at the world. It’s a great record.

Nine Inch Nails – Add Violence

One of the seminal acts of the 90s, Nine Inch Nails, are still doing their bizarre-ass thing in 2017.

Trent Reznor set the world on fire when he came out with his disquieting industrial rave rock.

We’re less easily surprised and put off by this kind of shit now, but if you’re trying to get a little weird this weekend, this new 5 track EP is perfect for you.

Nav & Metro Boomin – Perfect Timing

Toronto beatmaker turned rapper Nav teams up with Metro Boomin, the hottest producer in the game, to make this dark, leaned-out trip of fire vibes.

No, Nav is not the greatest rapper to ever grace the mic and yes, he kind of says the same shit on every song (he’s popping a lot of pharmaceuticals, smoking weed, and taking someone’s girl) but Metro Boomin’s production keeps the album on point.

This might not be the greatest thing to throw on at a party, but the after party will get lit to Perfect Timing.

Avey Tare – Eucalyptus

Avey Tare, one-fourth of experimental acid pop band Animal Collective, dropped his fourth album today, and it’s definitely out there.

Imagine if the Beach Boys took a bunch of acid — wait, if the Beach Boys took a bunch more acid — and had a 2017 studio and technology to make their music… that would still be less ambient and psychedelic than Avey Tare’s music.

If you’re having an especially trippy weekend, fuck with this Avey Tare.

Aminé – “Wedding Crashers”

Portland rapper Aminé taps up Migos’ Offset to deliver the fun, petty track “Wedding Crashers” in which the pair mock their exes for ditching them.

Aminé burst onto the scene with “Caroline” and is set to drop his debut album next week, along with a worldwide tour. There’s a lot of hype around the dude from the northwest, he definitely brings something different and interesting to the table.

A$AP Twelvyy – “Diamonds”

A$AP Mob keep doing their thing. Now Twelvyy is out here, partnering up with Rocky for “Diamonds.”

The Phantogram sampled track is vintage A$AP and definitely brings us back to early Rocky.

Twelvyy is definitely a problem right now, his album 2127301090 is set to drop in August.

A-Trak – “Believe” ft. Quavo, Lil Yachty

SpinGawd A-Trak hooks up with Lil Yachty and A-Trak on this bouncy, fun cut.

The Fool’s Gold head last released a 73 minute mix back in January, which is definitely worth a peep.

On September 7th, A-Trak will hold the first Goldie Awards, a new DJ and beat battle in Brooklyn with Just Blaze and Diplo as judges.

Kevin Gates – “No Love”

Despite being locked up for 30 months for felony gun possession in April, Kevin Gates is still churning out that music.

Apparently the Louisiana rapper left the project completely in the hands of his wife and business partner Dreka Gates.

“No Love” is typical Gates. Brash, hard, and give-no-shits attitude.

Free Kevin Gates.
