Legally Kardashian: What’s inspirational about Kim studying for the bar?

There is a wide range of associations one can make when it comes to the name, Kim Kardashian.

For many, it’s her adult tape featuring singer and reality star Ray J. For others it’s her wildly successful reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Some may even think Kanye when they think Kim — fitting seeing that he’s her husband and the father of her children.

Now, however, you can add ‘lawyer’ to that list.

Well, sort of…

The 38-year-old makeup entrepreneur and media superstar revealed in her Vogue cover story yesterday that she’s currently studying for the bar exam in hopes of one day becoming a lawyer.

According to Kim, her recent involvements in law reform woke the desire in her. “I never in a million years thought we would get to the point of getting laws passed. That was really a turning point for me,” she told Vogue.

Last year Kim famously — or infamously, depending on who you ask — lobbied President Donald Trump in an Oval Office meeting to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence on a nonviolent drug charge committed in 1996.

That led to her appearance on Variety and Rolling Stone‘s Criminal Justice Reform Summit in L.A last year. Also, her vow to help others, like Chris Young, a 30-year-old serving a life sentence for drug possession.

In actuality, it’s easy to see that law was a natural choice for her.

“I had to think long and hard about this,” she says in the Vogue issue.

“The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency… And I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like, Oh, shit. I need to know more. I would say what I had to say, about the human side and why this is so unfair.”

Kardashian continued, “But I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case. It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”

So more is what Kim is doing. And it’s inspirational as fuck.

Kim Kardashian may be rich and famous with claws deep in the flesh of what we love as hip-hop, but somehow she keeps going. She never allows herself to be pigeonholed or written off and her efforts to become a lawyer is a testament to that.

Luckily for Mrs. West, who runs a multimillion-dollar beauty enterprise, becoming a lawyer in California doesn’t require going to law school.

States like Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and California, where Kim resides, allows aspiring lawyers to study under an apprentice for several years, then take the bar exam alongside law school graduates.

If they pass, they can work as fully credentialed lawyers in the state. Individuals who choose this route in California must study in a law office for four years, at least 18 hours a week, and pass a “baby bar” after the first year.

In the interview, she admits that she’s studying and aims to take the California bar in 2022.

“First year of law school you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts, and contracts. To me, torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring, and crim law I can do in my sleep.”

“Took my first test, I got a 100. Super easy for me. The reading is what really gets me. It’s so time-consuming. The concepts I grasp in two seconds,” she continued.

Kim Kardashian has the resources to hire the world’s best mentors, the free-time to commit to studying, and nothing to lose. Additionally, her life would be unaffected if she didn’t pass, but she also has the wherewithal to fall on her face in pursuit of something she wants.

Say what you want about Kim, but make sure you say that too. There are tons of people who wish it and hope it, but little that do it.

If Kim Kardashian, with her reputation, thinks she can be a lawyer, what’s stopping you from thinking you can do whatever it is on Earth that you want?

Have to thank Kim for perspective on this one.
