Squad up: How 100+ artists created Dreamville’s ‘Dreamers III’ tape

Dreamville’s roster started out with J.Cole, Omen, and Bas, in 2014, when the record label first formed. The roster has grown over time to include Ari Lennox, Cozz and Lute, J.I.D. and EARTHGANG. Then a documentary was released on July 2, 2019, detailing the Dreamville’s REVENGE project.

Dreamville’s latest group project Revenge of the Dreamers III released July 5, 2019. The project began in January 2019 with the intention of creating an album with all of Dreamville’s artists.

The transformation of the plan began when the crew decided to send out invitations to outside producers and artists, and from then on requests to join in on the album grew. Cole stated:

“Everybody wanna come, and everybody is welcome at the same time.”

The invitees included Vince Staples, Guapdad 4000, T.I., Ludacris, Ty Dolla $ign, Wale, Dreezy, Smino, Kenny Beats, Deputy, Ron Gilmore Jr., Mike Will Made-It and many others.

Additionally, Dreamville reportedly hosted 100 artists and producers. Other artists with wild clout that also pulled up included Buddy, Young Nudy, KEY!, Maxo Kream, DaBaby and Ski Mask.

Even artists Maine admitted to shedding a couple of tears during the process.

The first few days were the most hectic with chaos and competition over rooms, space, and talent. But as we well know, now, that chaos brought creativity. The vibe quickly became a hotbed for musical inspiration.

The trust and respect amongst all who attended were high. Queens rapper Bas told Apple Music,

“I wish we could work like this all the time.”

The concept of bringing all these talented artists, producers and writers together in one space and letting them create was an unconventional one. Smino said, “I don’t know who else could’ve pulled some shit like this together and it be all positive.”

Also, don’t forget about all of the tracks that never made it. For sure we’ll see another project within the near future because we do need that Unreleased Revenge.

Shout out to Dreamville for creating this space to help creativity flourish and advance the careers of unheard of producers and give artists access to a powder keg of talent and inspiration. Like Cole said,

“More things like this would do so much for music period.”
