Today marks another win for hip-hop. Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical troll is now being forced to give up Wu-Tang Clan’s most coveted album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. As we inch closer to the 25 year anniversary of Wu-Tang’s debut album, Enter The Wu-Tang 36 Chambers, the timing couldn’t be better.
Shkreli rose to fame by trapping the anti-parasite drug, Daraprim, raising the price of the drug from $13.50 per pill, to $750 per pill. After clouting up in the pharmaceutical game virtually overnight, he bought Once Upon a Time in Shaolin for a whopping $2 million making it the most expensive album ever sold – Sheesh.
Copping the mysterious album wasn’t enough for the troll. After Shkreli’s friend bought Lil Wayne’s Bugatti Veyron, Shkreli found Tunechie’s most anticipated album, Tha Carter V. In troll-like fashion, Shkreli live-streamed himself listening to both albums and even took shots at Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killa.
Fortunately for Shrkeli, he found that the life of a troll is short lived. Shkreli got knocked by the Feds for defrauding investors. As part of his prison sentence Shkreli has to fork over $7.36 million.
After claiming he’s broke, Once Upon A Time in Shaolin is now a part of the payment. Lil Wayne fans should be happy to know that Tha Carter V is also being turned over from Shkreli’s possession as part of the settlement.
It’s up to speculation as to what happens next with Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. The $2 million dollar album was recorded in secret over a six year span.
The album is a single copy double-CD that could not be released commercially until 2103 due to legal agreements. Before it was auctioned off, fans were not rocking with the idea of a single copy.
This is an album Wu-Tang fans deserve to hear. Hopefully, the album lands of Diddy or Jay-Z, two hip-hop icons and future billionaires. Wu-Tang Clan’s ability to make music that’s visual and conceptual is rare.
Music is an artform. Like art, music appreciates with time. The world needs Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.
With the 25th anniversary of their debut album coming November 9th, do you think we will be blessed with the “secret” album?
