Colin Kaepernick closing in on Million Dollar Pledge with 10 straight days of $10k payments

Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who has been blackballed by NFL owners for his open protest of police brutality against people of color in America, has begun the final step of his Million Dollar Pledge.

The initiative, which started in October 2016, has Kaepernick donating a total of $1 million (divided into $10k payments) over 10 months to different charities and organizations.

Kaepernick stated back in October 2016:

“I will donate one million dollars plus all the proceeds of my jersey sales from the 2016 season to organizations working in oppressed communities, 100k a month for 10 months.”

ESPN broke down some of the different organizations Kaep has donated to thus far:

“Since October 2016, Kaepernick has donated to more than 30 charitable recipients ranging from Mothers Against Police Brutality to the I Will Not Die Young Campaign. His donations have been earmarked for everything from clothing for the needy to caskets for the dead.”

The final stretch of payments is broken into 10 days of donations worth $10k to different organizations. Each of Kaep’s payments is then matched by another prominent activist, entertainer, or athlete.

Kaepernick is less than halfway through his 10 day challenge, with only four days done so far, but the star power behind his movement is pretty damn palpable.

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant started off the 10 day challenge, matching Kaepernick’s $10k donation to De-Bug San Jose, described as a “platform for Silicon Valley’s diverse communities to impact the political, cultural, and social landscape of the region, while also becoming a nationally recognized model for community-based justice work.”

Day two saw Kaepernick joined by actor and activist Jesse Williams donating to The Advancement Project, a “a next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization.

Rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice, they exist to fulfill America’s promise of a caring, inclusive and just democracy.”

The Golden State Warriors once again got involved on Day 3 of the challenge, with point guard Steph Curry partnering up two donate to United Playaz, “a violence prevention and youth development organization that has worked in San Francisco for 20 years.”

Today, Kaepernick announced his latest donation, matched by rapper and general cultural legend Snoop Dogg, to Mothers Against Police Brutality, “the new voice for justice for victims of police brutality and deadly force.

They are multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition uniting mothers nationwide to fight for civil rights, police accountability, and policy reform.”

Colin Kaepernick may have lost his job because of his advocacy, but he’s still using his platform to advance his cause.

It’s a pretty amazing and admirable mission from the former quarterback, who has suddenly become one of the most prominent social activists in America.

We’ll update further as Kaepernick closes in on his Million Dollar Pledge.
