Who is Buster Scher? Meet the sports fan turned basketball brand

As a child, one of the most frequently asked questions is ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ The answers kids usually have are lofty, imaginative, and inspiring. Some aspire to become a NASA astronaut or even an NBA superstar. No matter the reply, kids set themselves to a high standard whether they realize it or not.

Unfortunately, these dreams don’t come true until they’re past their adolescent stage in life. However, with the dawn of social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, anyone, anywhere can catapult their dreams to careers with the right drive and passion.

Look no further than Hoops Nation’s founder, Buster Scher, as a leading example of that.

It was written in the stars for Buster. As a child, he grew up watching the Yankees. Baseball was his first love. Already, at that young age, he pledged his loyalty to the 27-time World Series Championship winning team.

For anyone that tunes into a Yankee game, they know that up in the commentator’s box, legend Michael Kay is guiding viewers and listeners alike. Up there he takes fans on an epic nine-inning journey. We recently had the chance to chop it up with Buster where he told us,

“When I was in high school, I thought I was gonna be a broadcaster. Junior year I won ‘Best Sportscast’ in the country for high school. I thought that broadcasting felt like too much work and that was when all of the social media stuff started to really pop.”

It was these moments in which Buster decided that he not only wanted to become a radio broadcaster but also carve out a platform for himself. Thus, the advent of Hoops Nation.

As the years progressed, Buster loosened his grip on baseball. It became too slow of a game for Buster to latch onto. A change was coming. He eventually found himself falling in love with the game of basketball.

This love eventually led to starting a fantasy basketball page on Facebook in 2015. He was just 15 when he started it. Buster recalled the early days of Hoops Nation, saying,

“I was very fortunate because I started this when I was very young. It was early in high school and I didn’t need to make any money. I could make $2,000 in a year and I’m happy. That’s why at 17 I could decide not to go to college and it made sense to everybody. I was very lucky in that regard. There was no plan.”

Within two years of starting Hoops Nation, Buster found himself surrounded by like-minded creators. Eventually, he would partner with curated brands such as Vayner Media (where he interned at the age of 16)Dunk, Atlantic (promoted and distributed content), and Overtime (Show host).

Through these relationships, Buster was able to elevate the Hoops Nation brand. Because of his success, brands started to come to him. One example of this is when Meek Mill, just dropped his album Championships. He told us,

“When Meek Mill’s album came out, they hit me up with the song Meek did with Drake and I took my favorite little 15-second bits and put that over the top of videos I thought would go viral. Then, I used my network on social, both Hoops Nation and 20 other pages that I am very close with and part of the budget that gave me to allocate it and distribute it out…”

Buster continued,

“So I’m able to get them x amount of impressions that they need on these songs using content that has either previously gone viral or that I know will go viral makes it super easy and super fun.”

Buster brings a methodical approach to his craft while adding his authentic love for the game with each piece of work he puts out. He built an organic following that only a handful of brands can match. And it’s solely his own creation.

“The good thing I’d say about owning Hoops Nation and having it be my own is that its instant leverage and value for any player. Since I started it, I’m able to do stuff like that, where I can just post a highlight even if it’s not the quality of highlight, even if I don’t think it will over-index every other piece of content, I’m gonna use it anyways.”

Hoops Nation is only a small part of who Buster is and what he plans to become. He summarized his ventures,

“Honestly, I see my personal brand being bigger than Hoops Nation. The goal is to build my personal brand up to a point where me being me is self-sufficient from a growth standpoint and then Hoops Nation, continuing to build that as a brand but separate from me and being able to have other people do it.”

Ultimately, we revere those with the drive and passion to see their childhood dreams come to fruition. This holds true for what Buster has built. He went above and beyond to obtain a career in sports broadcasting.

He created an entire media outlet focused on his love and passion for basketball. Now he is going above and beyond that. There’s only so much that words can do to describe the work Buster Scher has put into his craft.

Today, when we ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, they won’t just say they want to become an astronaut, politician, or athlete. They’ll say they want to be like Buster Scher; a creator, a broadcaster, and a sports fan.

It’s best to see his work firsthand here.

Overtime has consistently pushed forth basketball culture through their digital channels. Overtime Takeover is just one of the many outlets that Zack Weiner, Overtime’s co-founder and president, has helped create. He said,

“Over the past two years, we have changed the game in how these emerging stars are covered. Now, we want to reimagine the game itself. We’re excited to work with Converse to break down every aspect of the experience –the players, the rules, and the environment– and create something totally new.”

The Overtime Takeover takes place on May 18th at the historic Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse, where it will be transformed into an intimate space. Events will take place from 11 am to 3 pm, followed by exclusive events starting at 4 pm.

For the events taking place early on, you can cop tickets from this link. Additionally, the evening portion will be invite-only. Supporting grassroots community efforts in NYC, 15 organizations from the five boroughs will team up with Overtime to grow their sports and academic enrichment programs.

Will May 18th be a wave? Next question.

Earth is COOKED: How Lil Dicky & friends are fighting climate change

As we start making headway for summer, temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere are increasing.

Addin extra heat, over the 4/20 weekend, Lil Dicky dropped a planet-loving track called, “Earth,” featuring a mash-up of our planet’s hottest artists and entertainers.

From  Justin Biber to Kevin Hart to Joel Embiid, “Earth” embodies the mutual, instinctive love that all humans have for our blue and green planet.

The lyrics are intuitively cheesy and the video is wildly entertaining. However, there is a deeper message that Lil Dicky and Co. are sending.

The Earth is cooked. This cycle of natural disasters will ravage the Earth if we humans do not amend our ways. All in all, humanity is at a critical point in its history.

So much so that the actions that are taken over the next twelve years will determine whether or not the planet can recover from its human inflicted wounds.

We have seen firsthand how global warming can ravish the planet. Warming oceans, melting ice caps and scorching heat are only a fraction of dire consequences.

If global warming continues at its current pace, sea levels will rise and completely submerge some of the largest cities around the world. Peep this animation that shows what the planet would look like if all the ice caps melted.

There’s good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad.

The bad news is that submerged cities would force its inhabitants to shift inland, creating more densely populated areas. That would put an economic strain on certain regions as there may not be enough resources to support the health and wellness of the population.

According to Dr. Dmitry Yumashev, a mathematical modeler specializing in Climate Policy and Sustainability at Lancaster University, the release of carbon dioxide and methane from thawing permafrost will increase the rate of global warming.

This will add up to $70 trillion to the world’s climate bill, according to the most advanced study yet regarding the economic consequences of the melting Arctic.

But wait, there’s more.

Our oceans will sweep up some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. If we continue our ways, they will never to be experienced again. Take the sun-kissed shores on Hawaii for example.

Waikiki Beach is a popular tourist destination that brings in $2 billion per year in tourist revenue. Within 15 years, at the current global warming pace, Waikiki Beach will cease to exist. This would not be just an economic loss. Hawaiians will lose that beautiful beach that many of them call home.

Now enough, with the bad news. Here’s some good news. There are solutions.

There is a multitude of organizations educating the public about practicing sustainability. Plus, they are leading projects towards fighting the progression of global warming.

One organization, in particular, is the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation. This foundation’s main objective is to dedicate its resources to the protection and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants.

“Through grantmaking, public campaigns and media initiatives, LDF brings attention and needed funding to six program areas — Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.”

Following in Leo‘s footsteps, Lil Dicky has joined the cause to preserve and protect all inhabitants of the Earth.

As “Earth continues to rack up streams, it generates more and more profits that will all be donated to various environmental organizations. It also helps that the song is catchy, which will undoubtedly create awareness near and far.

Earth, it is our planet. Earth, it is our home. And right now it needs us, humans, to take strides to preserve all its inhabitants.

Lil Dicky and friends have set up a non-profit organization in conjunction with the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation. Check it fam, if you love your mom and want to preserve Mother Earth for generations to come, head over to WeLoveTheEarth.org to learn more and get involved.

Regenerating robots? How modern science is making science-fiction a reality

What is the future going to look like 10 years from now? 20 years from now? 40 years? The answer is, ” No one knows.”

But to give a decent example of what it may look like, people often refer to sci-fi books, movies, or content. It is no secret that creatives, such as writers, artists, and film directors, have imagined the future for us.

From flying cars in The Jetsons to spaceships to AI robots in iRobot, creatives have set the precedence for scientists and engineers as to what the future could look like.

One particular idea that seemed to inspire scientists and engineers come from the minds of James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd.

Their hit franchise, The Terminator, tells a story of a cyborg assassin sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor whose son (John Connor) will one day be the savior of the human race in a post-apocalyptic future.

Now, this idea stems from the self-regeneration ability that the cyborg assassin, known as T-800 “Model 101” has in its arsenal.

A regenerating robot that can repair itself seems farfetched today. However, engineers at Cornell University have made a breakthrough by creating a ‘lifelike‘ material with artificial metabolism.

Using a material that Cornell engineers termed as DASH (DNA-based Assembly and Synthesis of Hierarchical), they were able to construct a DNA material with capabilities of self-assembly, organization, and metabolism – three key traits of life.

So what does that mean? Dan Luo, professor of biological and environmental engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, explained,

“We are introducing a brand-new, lifelike material concept powered by its very own artificial metabolism. We are not making something that’s alive, but we are creating materials that are much more lifelike than have ever been seen before.”

Essentially, this material is autonomously building itself from the ground up and maintaining itself by decomposing any unwanted matter.

Shogo Hamada, a lecturer and research associate in the Luo lab, and lead and co-corresponding author of the paper further explains this breakthrough stated,

“The designs are still primitive, but they showed a new route to create dynamic machines from biomolecules. We are at a first step of building lifelike robots by artificial metabolism. Even from a simple design, we were able to create sophisticated behaviors like racing. Artificial metabolism could open a new frontier in robotics.”

Is this a new frontier in robotics? This breakthrough can go down several roads. One of them being the production of smarter machines in the manufacturing industry.

Who knows? Perhaps this breakthrough will improve tools in the medical industry or force the complete surrender of the human race to robot overlords.

Tiger Woods’ Masters victory proves you can be down, but never out

You’re on a roller coaster ride and you’re approaching the peak of the ride. There’s a brief moment of weightlessness, where everything is calm. This is bliss. At this moment, you’re thinking life is pretty good.

Then, all of a sudden, you’re going downhill at 80 plus MPH. Now, imagine that experience as the two big-loop roller coaster ride known as Tiger Woods’ career.

It was smooth sailing for the once great golfer. His career started off red-hot, winning major championship after championship. Proving his “goatness,” he burst on to the professional golf scene in the summer of 1996, quickly made waves, and was named the Sports Illustrated 1996 Sportsman of the Year.

Adding to his resume, he was awarded PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and won his first Masters. He even ascended to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

This all happened in just his first year of his professional career. With such a hot start to a potentially legendary career, Tiger never looked back and ruled the golfing world for the next decade and some change.

However, his career took a 180 degree turn when he was involved in a scandal that exposed his extramarital affairs. This was the most immense loss of his career as people questioned his character, powerful brands rescinded their sponsorships, and his personal troubles became public.

And that was just the first big loop on his roller coaster of a career.

After overcoming the trials and tribulations of his personal life, Tiger made his return to golf. Now, for Tiger, this wasn’t going to be the typical comeback tour; it was no walk in the park for him.

Unfortunately, his attempt at reviving his once dominant career was plagued by a series of injuries. They ranged from pinched nerves to severe back spasms that required spinal fusion surgery as a remedy.

Additionally, these injuries severely derailed his performance, and with that came questions. Questions that brought forth doubts in which Tiger’s career had come to an end.

Redemption is the greatest story ever told in sports and Tiger’s recent adventure falls right into that category. There’s always something about the underdog that invokes great emotions from our spirit.

In the case of Tiger Woods, he put that on full display during an eccentric weekend at Augusta National Golf Club. He did the unlikely. He won his fifth overall Masters and put on the illustrious green jacket once again. Particularly, he had not won at this level since the 2008 US Open. Many questioned then if that was the end of an era.

He gave the answer fans and doubters were looking for last weekend. Tiger fired back by winning the 2019 Masters and secured his spot as one of the all-time greats in golf. Notably, this is one of the greatest career revivals in recent memory and one of the most recent examples of overcoming adversity in sports.

His performance has golf-legend, Jack Nicklaus, “shaking in his boots” as Tiger captured his 15th win in a major tournament. In reality, this win put him closer than ever to Nicklaus’ record of 18 wins in a major tournament.

This adversarial journey comes full circle. But the trials and tribulations of life started before Tiger went pro. He was aware of his impact on the sport from an early age.

Peep this interview of Tiger at 14-years-old.

“Since I’m black, it might be even bigger than Jack Nicklaus. I might be even bigger than him to the blacks. I may be…it…So, like a Michael Jordan in basketball.”

His awareness of the position he was in was evident at 14. Obviously, he fully understood how his career would impact others. To him, it was more than just golf. After a roller coaster of a career and a hell of a weekend, there’s no wonder why Tiger exuded this much emotion.

This is bliss.

Earth is Cooked: How the Juliana v. U.S. case could change the game

Picture this: A child is blowing a large bubble using only a wand and the air provided from his lungs.

Now the bubble keeps growing larger and larger until finally…POP! The bubble disappears due to constant increasing air pressure within the confines of the bubble.

Now, what would happen if this phenomenon was scaled up? Scaled way up? On a planetary sized level! As a matter of fact, let’s take that bubble and call it with Earth. How much pressure would Earth have to experience in order to “pop”?

What would be the effects of such a “pop”? To tell you the truth, I have no idea and I have no intention of finding out. Neither do the plaintiffs of the potential landmark case Juliana v. United States.

A post shared by NASA Climate Change (@nasaclimatechange) on

Born in the environmentalism hotbed of Eugene, Oregon, Juliana v. United States was filed in 2015 by kids in order to stop the United States from continuing the use of fossil fuels. They argue that fossil fuel usage is causing climate change, jeopardizing their future, and violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property. The lead plaintiff, Kelsey Juliana, is a University of Oregon student leading the charge along with 20 other plaintiffs with ages ranging from 11 to 22 years old.

Julian Olson, the mastermind behind this collection of children and young adults is an Oregon lawyer and the Executive Director of a non-profit organization called “Our Children’s Trust”. She also believes that the Earth is Cooked. She recruited the plaintiffs from environmental groups across the country with a mission to “secure the legal right to a stable climate and healthy atmosphere for the benefit of all present and future generations.” This collective and their mission sounds quite impressive, but wait till you hear about the body of evidence they have amassed to support their case.

To document the U.S. government’s involvement in climate change, Olson and her organization created a timeline that details which U.S. administrations had knowledge about the relationship between climate change and burning fossil fuels. This timeline stretched as far back as 1965, right in the middle of the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. Each administration since then, regardless of party affiliation, was aware of the threat of carbon dioxide emissions. The government has always known that the Earth is Cooked.

Our Children’s Trust was able to compile roughly 36,000 pages and over 50 years of evidence. Of course, they will be using this evidence in the case against the U.S.

The lawsuit created states that the government has proven to be lackluster in its dealings with climate change; failing in its responsibility to protect the nation’s forests, air, water, and coastlines.

Additionally, this lawsuit petitions that the judicial branch forces the government to create a plan that would cut off fossil fuel usage by the middle of this century.

Animation Domination Fox GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Late 2016, after months of legal proceedings, a U.S. federal judge DENIED the U.S. government its motion to dismiss the case. Additionally, the judge ruled that the lawsuit could proceed to trial. No federal judge has ever made that decision.

In what is a potential landmark decision, Judge Ann Aiken wrote,

“Exercising my reasoned judgment, I have no doubt that the right to a climate system capable of sustaining human life is fundamental to a free and ordered society.”

Moreover, the significance of this decision is that a court has never recognized the constitutional right to a clean and stable environment.

Certainly, the youth have put down their bubble wands and picked up legal scales. Children of this generation no longer live in a bubble; they are proactive and ambitious like never before, and this is just the beginning.

The future is bright with these children at the helm. The best action we can take is to support this effort, for the betterment of ourselves, the country, and the world.
