DJ Khaled’s son definitely got all the other babies hatin’. This little guy is extremely blessed. He’s already an icon at the age of 7 months.

My son already has a huge following. Asahd has close to a million Instagram followers and is verified on Twitter. TBH I’m wild jelly.

Not to mention he is the executive producer of DJ Khaled’s album, Grateful, which is due to drop June 23.

Asahd is doing big things! He has a list of wild homies already and he hasn’t even made it to the sandbox yet. DJ Khaled’s networking game for the baby star is crazy.

Nipsey Hussle drops mini-doc, encourages black-owned business in L.A.

Nipsey Hussle has stepped his game up. Hussle will be opening the first official Marathon Clothing flagship store Saturday, June 17th.

While interviewing with Power 106 Los Angeles, Nipsey promised to drop a documentary on WSHH telling us the story behind the location of his new store.

The store will open in the parking lot where Nipsey came up, on the corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Slauson Ave., right behind the Shell gas station.

During the interview with Power 106 LA, Nipsey explained how he could have opened it on Fairfax or on Melrose, but he felt a responsibility to the place he came from and wants to focus on redeveloping the area.

Nipsey has an emotional connection to the spot. He wants the store to offer hope, putting pressure on surrounding businesses to step their game up and provide jobs to those who wouldn’t find employment elsewhere.

The documentary depicts the struggles of what it took to finally obtain 3420 W. Slauson Ave #F Los Angeles, CA 90043. The video takes the Plaza back in time. This is where the marathon began.

Listen to interviews of those who grew up around Nipsey and watch clips of old videos showing us what it took for Hussle to finally reach this point.

You can see the gears turning in Nip’s head whenever the camera snaps back to him. Viewers will see this is the vision of a hustler. Being able to see someone come from nothing and create is the ultimate inspiration. Nipsey was able to turn his street hustling into something substantial, see it come to fruition in the doc.

People are feeling some type of way about this year’s XXL Freshmen list

Yesterday, XXL blessed us with their 2017 Freshman list. This year marks the 10th-anniversary of the Freshman franchise.

Who’s gracing the cover this year?

This year’s Freshman Class includes the Bay Area’s Kamaiyah, the BX’s A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Philly’s PnB Rock, ATL’s Playboi Carti, Kap G, and Madeintyo.

Plus, Portland’s AminĂ©, Cali’s Kyle, Houston’s Ugly God, and FL’s XXXTentacion.

Do they really deserve this cover though?

XXL‘s Freshman list is like the crystal ball of hip-hop. Most artists that are selected for the list go on to become megastars of the music industry.

The first class, back in 2007, included Saigon, Plies, Rich Boy, Gorilla Zoe, Joell Ortiz, Lupe Fiasco, Lil Boosie, Crooked I, Papoose, and Young Dro. Do you think the class ’17 artists even come close to that Freshman class of ’07?

What ’bout the class of 2010?

Straight fire! J.cole made the class of 2010 along with Pill, Nipsey Hussle, Freddie Gibbs, Big Sean, OJ da Juiceman, Jay Rock, Fashawn, and Donnis.

Since the reveal, there has been some backlash on social media regarding this year’s selection. Is the class of ’17 really the future of hip-hop? Rap fans, even rappers themselves, seem to disagree with the vision.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll all be surprised, there are many cyphers to come. Let us know what you think about XXL‘s Freshman Class of 2017.

Meet Demetrius Shipp Jr., the man born to play Tupac in ‘All Eyez On Me’

If you haven’t heard already, All Eyez on Me, a biopic depicting the life of the prolific rapper, actor, poet, and activist, Tupac Shakur will be premiering this Friday, June 16.

The premiere date would’ve been Pac’s 46 birthday.

Who’s playing the part of Tupac? Demetrius Shipp Jr., the son of Demetrius Shipp Sr., who had worked with Shakur to produce the song “Toss It Up” before the rapper was murdered in an unsolved drive-by shooting in 1996.

Peep the crazy throwback visuals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owdl9BnxHV4

Even though Demetrius Shipp Jr.’s father was connected with Tupac it wasn’t dad that pushed him to audition for the role of Tupac Shakur. It was Demetrius’ friend who urged him to try out for the role back in 2011.

Shipp Jr. had no aspirations of becoming an actor and actually had goals of becoming a music producer. Before getting the role, Shipp Jr. was hustling at Sears and installing satellites for Dish Network to pay his bills so he could chase his music dreams.

Demetrius wasn’t lying he has the sick beats

https://soundcloud.com/caro_ptl/roism-mix3

With close to no acting experience whatsoever, Shipp Jr. auditioned for the part via video submission. He submitted the video 30 minutes before the deadline. It wasn’t until Shipp Sr. saw the video that he forwarded his son’s submission to LT Hutton, executive producer of the film.

Hutton was impressed by Shipp Jr.’s performance. Even though Shipp was a perfect fit for the Tupac role, he was still surprised he was offered the part according to what he said in an interview with The Daily News,

“I still remember that day. I just sat down and the tears started to flow. I can relive that moment forever. It was just a dope, surreal moment. It was like, ‘I can’t believe it. It’s real.’ “

The day Demetrius Shipp Jr. got the part was the day he became Tupac Shakur.

Travis Scott is going to take over 2017 on work ethic alone

Lately, Travis Scott has been dropping fire. He’s released a bunch of tracks in the past couple months, all of which have been the flames.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight came out almost a year ago now and Rodeo almost two years ago. The funny thing is that both albums went platinum at the same time, hitting the 1,000,000-unit mark on the same day: May 22, 2017.

Both projects were too poppin’, peaking at No. 3 and No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. Rodeo’s single “Antidote” has since gone triple platinum.

While Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight’s “Goosebumps” and “Pick Up the Phone” both have gone double platinum.

“Pick Up the Phone,” actually certified double platinum on May 22 as well, meaning Travis received three platinum certifications in just one day.

The day before that, May 21, Scott was playing at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Cleveland, Ohio and performed “Goosebumps” 15 times in a row, breaking his own Guinness World Record record in the process.

How you break your own Guinness World record the day before you receive three platinum certifications in one day?

Travis looking at everyone like…

Travis got the plaques, the money, and the following, so why is he still out there dropping tracks like crazy? It’s because he’s a muthafuckin’ boss.

Do you remember me saying, Scott has been dropping the flames? The past couple of months have been crazy for Travie fans everywhere. The first song that set it off for me after BITTSM was posted on Spotify but then taken down called “Yeah, Yeah” featuring Young Thug. We found the plug on Soundcloud tho.

Since the beginning of spring, Scott has been on a straight up roll. He released three tracks on the same day “A Man,” “Butterfly Effect,” and “Green & Purple,” which features Playboi Carti. Then assisting Frank Ocean on “Lens,” SZA on “Love Galore,” 2 Chainz on “4 AM,” and Major Lazor on “Know No Better.”

Peep the fire:

What’s crazy? We’re not even done with this list of artistic traps. Peep this wild video La Flame made starring James Harden for his song “Way Back

And the short film he just dropped Birds in the Trap

It’s awesome to see how much Scott has grown and continues to grow. 2017 is definitely going to be a great year for him with a new album, some shit with Quavo in the works, as well as Travie pairing up with Nike for the new VaporMax kicks showing music is just the beginning.

Being only 25 years old, with two platinum albums, a Guinness World Record, and a collaboration with the largest sportswear brand in the world, I’d say Travie is a straight hustler.

Oh, I forgot to mention his 3rd studio album, Astroworld, is on the way as he promised us back in December

And is going to drop a project soon with Quavo called Cactus Jack x Huncho

King Saladeem

How King Saladeen overcame adversity and became a Street Visionary

July 4th, 2011 was the day Raheem Saladeen Johnson became street artist King Saladeen. He says that he, “walked out of his 9 to 5 to walk on water.”

Saladeen was born and raised in West Philadelphia and his passion for the arts began at the age of 5. He would draw whatever he could get his hands on for his mother, particularly any wall that came his way.

He uses splashes of vibrant colors and bears to depict his abstract inspirations and state of mind, expressing himself through his art.

It’s #Bearseason

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNNnpn_AZHl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Growing up as an inner-city child, art activities were few and far between. So, Saladeen excelled at another passion, basketball. Saladeen would go on to score 1,000 points in high school.

Basketball opened his artistic vision. Joining and playing for AAU teams gave him the opportunity to travel across the country. It was during these travels that he began daydreaming about color and design. The landscapes he viewed were another source of influence and inspiration.

But, an auto accident at 15 years old put basketball on the sidelines. Fortunately, during this hiatus, Saladeen’s spark for drawing was re-ignited. After recovering he did receive a Division 1 scholarship, but after 2 years he realized the paintbrush was his true love.

After returning home to Philadelphia, Raheem worked as a design artist for a clothing company which grew into a national success. After the company was sold, he began doing work for a group home for teens in Philadelphia.

He showed the youths he worked with how to use art as a way to relieve stress. It became a light in the dark for these teens dealing with trauma.

Peep the inspo.

We can see who Saladeen is going for in the NBA Finals this year. He will never bet against Bron because someone in his entourage is partly responsible for the Saladeen’s success.

John JP Thompson saw Saladeen’s talent and worth at an early stage, JP bought Saladeen his first set of professional art supplies. He encouraged him to focus solely on the arts and to make it his lifelong career.

Saladeen took his friend’s advice and the rest was history. In 2011 he began his venture at the Saladeen Art Group. Sadly, a couple of years later, JP, passed away of brain cancer.

Since his success, King Saladeen has had shows in Miami…

Soho, NYC…

And LA.

And he’s driving custom Lambos with his own artwork on it.

It seems there’s nowhere to go but up for King Saladeen. If you’re interested in seeing more of his art or buying a piece click here, homie.

NYC announces $150 million Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Museum coming in 2018

Hip-hop has been around for almost half of a century and it is finally getting the appreciation it deserves.

Yesterday, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio dubbed June 8th Global Hip-Hop Day where true rap enthusiasts from all over helped reveal Hip-Hop Blvd at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx, where the genre is said to have originated.

It’s about time

https://twitter.com/HOT97/status/872923836773257218

The homies Ebro, Joey Bada$$, and Ryan Leslie came through for a quick panel, something light for the kids

Remy Ma was also honored at the event

June is starting out to be a great month for hip-hop.

A global day to commemorate the world-changing genre as well as the announcement of a $150M Capital Fundraising Campaign to complete acquisition of a building and development site for a Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.

The Hip-Hop Television Channel released a press release proudly announcing that the Official Hip-Hop Hall of Fame and Museum won its bid to acquire a major Harlem building and development site.

The project is expected to go through two phases. According to the press release the project is expected to open in February 2018, already has a bunch of key investors, and will enable 25,000 NYC public school students to visit per year.

JT Thompson, the creator of the first ever Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Awards TV show and Founder of the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Museum said,

‘The preliminary plan includes a ground floor themed HHHOF cafĂ©, gallery, visitors bureau, and retail gift store with a second floor HHHOF museum, event space, offices, and multi-media studio for film and television content production in partnership with the HHHOF Arts & Media Youth Academy students that will be training for careers in tech and media, while producing real-life content for the museum, and the hip hop television channel network’

Hov is up to something: Take a closer look at Jay Z’s recent moves

Jay-Z has been dropping hints to a project he’s currently working on called 4:44.

The numbers have been placed all over NYC including several subway stations like the Jay St. stop in Brooklyn as well as Times Square. Signs were also spotted in Los Angeles.

Peep the hype

The ambiguous ads left the music industry in a state of confusion as media and fans tried to figure out what the numbers meant. Blogs crafted theories attempting to decode the numbers, but no site could figure it out.

Variety’s Roy Trakin went in with the breakdown of what the numbers could possibly mean,

Jay-Z and Beyonce have both attached significance to the number “4,” sporting matching “IV” tattoos on their wedding, while Jay Z’s birthday is December 4 and Beyonce’s is September 4.  Their daughter’s name Blue Ivy (IV, the Roman numeral for 4).  He’s also released songs called “22 Twos” and “44 Fours.” Others speculate it’s the long-awaited Blueprint 4 or the :44 could mean the eagerly anticipated Jigga-Bey collab.  Or could it be a reference to the birth of the couple’s twins?

Trust me, when those numbers were revealed, and knowing that Jay-Z was behind it, I bugged.

Especially after seeing Swizz beats and Jigga together in May on Instagram with the caption “AlbumModeZone”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTsr3-YD_Dh/

Alright, Hov are you just chillin’ laughing at us? Like, what exactly is 4:44? Is it an album? Is it a video album? Could it all just be a hoax?

An ad premiered during Game 3 of the NBA Finals last night giving us at least some answers.

The commercial had incredible visuals and starts out with Mahershala Ali’s slowly creeping out of the darkness to the toughest fuckin beat. The scene then cuts to Ali sparring with a punching bag. Viewers then got to see the amazing cast of who would be starring in the film with Ali.

No big deal just another Academy Award winner, Lupita Nyong’o, and Donald Glover. It turns out 4:44 is a collaboration between Tidal and Sprint and it is a film that will debut on Tidal.

And it’s rated NC-17, it’s finna be lit

There is obviously still speculation if Jay-Z is dropping an album and once we followed the link it brought us to a landing page that said we would find out more tomorrow. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Donald Glover officially retires ‘Childish Gambino,’ makes us mad sad

Gambino, Gambino… Gambino don’t leave?

In the latest sad news, it looks like rapper/singer/actor/producer, Donald Glover, is retiring the Childish Gambino moniker.

Glover announced on Saturday at Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York City that his next album will be his last album. “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album,” he said at the end of his performance.

Eight words I never wanted to hear Gambino say:

The Feels…

This will be Gambino’s last album? In an interview with Huffington Post, Glover confirmed that he plans to retire his rap moniker, because he feels that Gambino isn’t “necessary.”

This year was a great year for Glover. It has a lot of us wondering, why would he abandon music? Music-wise Gambino is very creative. C’mon he’s a Grammy-nominated artist who has released seven mixtapes, two EPs, and three studio albums.  Like, he’s so close to being a legendary artist.

“Redbone” just peaked at the No. 17 spot on Billboard this week and his third studio album “Awaken, My Love!,” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B charts.

Definitely going to miss his funkadelic Redbone performances

Because the Internet was that heat too

And we hope you didn’t sleep on STN MTN / Kauai

In the interview with Huffington post, Glover stated,

“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’… You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

According to his statements in the Huffington post interview, Glover wants to focus more on his punk image and how he doesn’t want to compromise his punk-ness,

“Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk. Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at ‘Atlanta’ as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

Is there anything we can do to get Gambino back beyond one last album? Maybe not. Glover has a lot on his plate this year.

Glover will be appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, has been cast as the young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars movie, and will be the voice of Simba in a remake of The Lion King. Not to mention starring and writing his own series on FX Atlanta.

Oh yeah, Glover and his brother, Stephen, will work with Marvel Television and FX Productions on 10 episodes of Deadpool

Farewell Gambino. We, along with the rest of the music industry, definitely miss you.

Flying Lotus reveals premier date for brazy debut film ‘Kuso’

Music producer Steve Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, can now add another skill to his long list of talents. After receiving mixed reviews this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Flying Lotus’ Sundance thriller Kuso is set to premiere July 21.

Flying Lotus is a stupid hype director

https://twitter.com/flyinglotus/status/872124757164085252

Fresh out the gate, Kuso, did not receive the best reviews when it made its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Critics claimed there were mass walkouts at the Midnight showing. Back in January technology website, The Verge, called Kuso, “the grossest movie ever made.”

Verge reviewer Christ Plante wrote:

“Some folks stuck around after a woman chewed on concrete until her teeth disintegrated, but still peaced out when an alien creature force-yanked a fetus from another woman’s womb (accompanied by a Mortal Kombat sound clip: ‘Get over here!’), then smoked the tiny corpse.”

How you gonna do my mans dirty like that?

According to FLYLO the critics were exaggerating just a little bit…

https://twitter.com/flyinglotus/status/824531509663191042?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

It was at the press screening where Flying Lotus saw most of the walkouts where he almost decided to distribute the film himself

Twitter

At risk of distributing himself and with all the mixed reviews, the homie FLYLO was able to snatch a deal with AMC’s, Shudder, an over-the-top subscription video on demand service featuring horror films.

He caught the attention of Shudder’s GM, Linda Pan, who said,

“’Kuso’ pushes the boundaries of filmmaking and we’re delighted to be working with Steve on this highly unique film, as Shudder continues it’s commitment to bringing new and innovative programming to its community.”

Respect to Shudder, I would’ve been so tight if the world would never got to see this film

https://twitter.com/flyinglotus/status/872110540562345984

Using music, special effects, and animation Kuso depicts an apocalyptic earthquake-shaken LA. The collection of semi-connected short films chronicles the lives of the mutated women, men, and children that were affected by the catastrophic event.

The film also hints at some interesting commentary about Los Angeles, racism, and the dark history of America.

Listen, I’m looking forward to this premier I don’t care how gross it is. The soundtrack selection for this film is equally wild. Expect to hear new music from FLYLO, Aphex Twin, Thundercat, Busdriver, The Buttress, and much more.

Oh, did I mention Ellison casted George Clinton to play a doctor with a cockroach up his butt? Viewers will also get to see Hannibal Buress and Anders Holm )Anders in ‘Workaholics’).

Haven’t seen the trailer yet? Check it out below and let us know what you think.
