Junk food, dirty water, and disease: A month later Puerto Rico is still suffering

How would you feel if your government provided you with whack food during a disastrous time? How long would you last on canned Vienna sausages, a squished Nutri-Grain bar, and a bag of cooked Skittles?

Consider eating that meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would only last a couple of days. Even if you were able to survive off of a candy, granola, and canned sausage diet, that wouldn’t exactly be the healthiest meal to eat for a month.

Weeks after Hurricane Maria, thousands of Puerto Ricans are surviving on just that – junk food. FEMA rations look like they are the contents of a “college vending machine,” as reported by the Washington Post.

Journalist Josh Sanchez tweeted a photo of the ration package earlier this month. It was retweeted over 19,000 times out of disgust.

https://twitter.com/jnsanchez/status/918491902147743745

Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré, who commanded the head of Joint Task Force during Katrina, slammed the federal response to Puerto Rico.

He expressed his disgust via Facetime with Sanchez.

https://twitter.com/jnsanchez/status/918890674791092224

It doesn’t make sense. Why would we treat other human beings facing a disaster like this? Beats me. There’s no excuse as to why people should be living off of “beef jerky, Cheez-Its, and shelf stable tuna chunks.”

According to the WaPo report, in a public appearance on October 20, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz rifled through a federal shipment of chocolate pudding and other snack foods before throwing the box aside in disgust.

Experts are saying that critics don’t understand how emergency food works. Most of PR is still without power and “junk food” is said to be a part of the solution.

Jarrod Goentzel, the head of the Humanitarian Response Lab at MIT, said,

“It’s a delicate dance, but it’s not as if they’re shipping in boatloads of candy.”

There is some confusion as to which food packages were provided by FEMA. Eighty other relief organizations are operating on the island and local leaders have opened and repacked aid boxes before handing them out.

That hasn’t stopped people from roasting FEMA on social media. They provided no rebuttal to the concerning social scorn, but instead stressed, “The agency and its partners are distributing more than 2 million meals per week on the island of 3.4 million people.”

The “junk food” rations definitely raise questions of concern.

But, nearly 1 million Americans in Puerto Rico are still without drinkable water. The Huffington Post reported that in desperation, thirsty patrons have succumbed to drinking from hazardous wells at Superfund sites.

Some have even been drinking from creeks that sick animals have urinated in. This contaminated water is in direct correlation with the 74 reported cases of leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is the result of contact with water contaminated by animal urine. The disease’s symptoms are varied. They include high fever, jaundice, red eyes, and body pain.

There is the threat of more cases being reported. After a person has been exposed to contaminated water it can take anywhere between two days and four weeks for symptoms to appear.

The CDC stated that some people might not even show any symptoms at all.

Four deaths are being investigated as possible causes of the disease, according to the Associated Press. What’s even more upsetting is that officials have yet to call it an epidemic or a confirmed outbreak.

Still, President Trump says we are doing a “great job.” At a White House event last week with Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, Trump said,

“I’d say it was a 10. I give ourselves a 10. … We have provided so much, so fast. We were actually there before the storm hit.”

At that time, 30 percent of the island was still without drinking water and 80 percent was still without power. The government data is updated daily but HuffPo reports that volunteers on the island say the situation is grimmer.

In the words of San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, “We need to get our shit together.”

It’s never too late to lend a helping hand to the victims suffering in PR. Donate here today.

Taco Bell is putting Kit-Kats in quesadillas because they’re ratchet

Taco Bell probably just made their most sus movement of all time.

The fast food brand is testing Kit-Kat and Twix quesadillas in Wisconsin, which also happens to be one of the most sus states in the US.

According to my state nickname knowledge, isn’t Wisconsin known as the cheese state? So, why are they serving up this chocolaty concoction?

Is there no more cheese left? Nah, this is a sick and twisted experiment. Taco Bell tested the Chocoladilla last fall in the UK before bringing it to American shores.

According to Brand Eating, the Kit-Kat catastrophe is melted chocolate and Kit Kat pieces folded and grilled in a flour tortilla

Peep the quality for yourself.

Yo, chill.

Some poor soul at the drive thru window would get shmacked in the face with this if this was what my hard earned money paid for. I don’t care if it’s $1 this is some fuckboy shit.

Like, would you go out of your way to cop this? You could easily make this at the crib. As far as stoned munchies go, it really can’t get any easier than this thing.

According to Mashable, a representative for Taco Bell confirmed that it’s been testing the product in Wisconsin since Oct. 5 and will continue to offer it through mid-November.

In regards to the Chocoladilla or Chocodile (depending on what name Taco Bell chooses) coming to the US it all depends on “customer response.” The $1 value menu item is already available in several other countries.

These sick and demented tests will help Taco Bell in future testing rounds. This is even if the Chocoladilla doesn’t make a permanent appearance on the Taco Bell value menu.

Taco Bell is also hyping their $1 vanilla iced coffee to go along with the hot boy dessert. To be honest, I’m so good. I think I would rather just go with a regular quesadilla.

Who knows? Chocoholics might really like this idea.

Amazon sent couple 65 pounds of weed and they snitched on themselves

A couple in Orlando, Florida thought it was a good idea to snitch on themselves when an Amazon package arrived with 65 pounds of marijuana in it.

The couple noticed something was off when the felt how heavy the package was. Upon opening their highly anticipated storage totes they were greeted by the loud.

What would you do? Would you keep the 65 pounds worth of sour to yourself? If I didn’t have the pelotas to keep it all, I would have kept at least a pound for myself.

But, maybe calling the cops right away was a good idea. The couple is staying anonymous as they are worried for their safety.

This is enough lost weed to get a drug dealer tight, around $208,000 worth of tightness. Wouldn’t you be shook too even if you had a nug of it?

Might have to smoke that real quick. No evidence, you feel me?

Chris Tucker Dope GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

According to an interview with WFTV, the customer said that when cops pulled up they were in “disbelief.”

Even after police seized the marijuana the Amazon customers still had fear that someone might find them and do them dirty. According to the WFTV report the family didn’t sleep at the trap for a few days.

“We were still pretty fearful our home would be broken into, and we didn’t sleep there for a few days,” said the customer.

The couple also tried to reach out to Amazon. They searched for an apology and an explanation about how this could happen. They sent emails back and forth over the course of a month and never spoke to a supervisor.

All the customers received was $150 Amazon gift card and a message that said, “I am unable to do anything else at this time.”

Sheesh! What a trade.

Amazon did release a statement saying, “Its customer service team worked directly with the customer to address concerns and will work with law enforcement to investigate the case.”

This could be a look for the mega company. Amazon might see an influx of large plastic tote deliveries.

Who knows? Next time it could be you that accidentally gets 65 pounds worth of marijuana delivered to your doorstep.

Stay on the look out homie!

#ThankYouBasedGod: Lil B’s most positive messages for the youth dem

What does it mean to be “Based”?  Based means being yourself, staying positive, and making people accept you for who you are.

You don’t have to change for anyone as long as your movement is positive. The “Based Life” is a choice to be optimistic despite the obstacles in your way.

If everyone becomes “Based” we can all evolve together as human beings instead of independently.

This is Lil B’s religion and he is the revolutionary rapper behind being “Based.” He has used his voice to inspire millions around the world.

His thousands of songs are all about positivity and self-love. Not only does he include an upbeat vibe in his massive library of rap songs but he uses his influence on social media to encourage those that might be looking for happiness.

Lil B is a positive prophet. When he was 19, Lil B authored his book Takin Over, which was devoted to spreading an uplifting message to haters everywhere. Truly a based bible.

His message is so positive he gets invited to do lectures at prestigious universities. His movement shouldn’t be taken as a joke. During these seminars, he has touched on a variety of subjects with a socially progressive attitude.

We might as well call him the rainbow of positivity in the rap game. His strange style has influenced a grip of emcees. Lil Yachty and Vince Staples have taken a page from his book and credited Lil B for impacting their style.

Recently, BasedGod was ambushed by A Boogie and PnB Rock’s crews at the Rolling Loud Festival, currently taking place in the Bay Area. The news was very sad to me as I’ve always seen Lil B as a peaceful and loving dude.

So why would anyone do this to him? In the words of Travis Scott, ScHoolboy Q, and Kaytranada in response to the attacks, “Protect Lil B at all fucking costs!”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BajGPkDl7bj/

Many would’ve expected Lil B to put positivity to the side after he was jumped. He surprised us all taking the stage for his set with nothing but love. Lil B actually couldn’t even perform because someone stole his equipment.

On stage B, said, “It’s all good I said something about Boogie music and they all got mad and they jumped me about that. So, it’s all good.”

He also caught up with Shaheem Reid in an interview for Revolt and reiterated his message of pacifism,

“How I’m going to use this to show people to make sure you don’t retaliate with violence. I’m not going to retaliate with violence. I love them. I love Boogie and his whole crew. I’ll hang with them, feel me. We’ll shake hands after this…”

His tweet in response to A Boogie’s unawareness to the situation was golden. Lil B calls for unity at all times.

Lil B has so much love in his heart. Hopefully, he will continue to touch hearts and minds throughout the timeline of humanity. Forgive them of their sins BasedGod, for they know not what they do.

WE LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU BASEDGOD.

Scientific study says dolphins could take over the planet…if they had thumbs

It’s DOLPH!

Dolphins are probably the cutest mammals the ocean has to offer. They are also one of the most intelligent species on the planet. They are man’s best sea friend.

Psych, FOH!

If this marine species had thumbs they would come for our necks. Thank god evolution did them dirty.

Gang!

A new study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution states that dolphins and whales possibly possess the intelligence to dominate humans.

The study is the first of its kind. Scientists came together from all around the globe in order to compile research on 90 different species of dolphins, whales, and porpoises.

Sheesh! That’s a lot of blowholes.

The societal and cultural characteristics were researched in order to make a connection between brain size and brain expansion. This was done in order to compare it to the evolution of our species.

The research points to the fact that Cetaceans have sophisticated social and cooperative behavior traits, similar to many found in humans.

Cetaceans are able to work together for a mutual benefit, they can hunt and use tools, they can talk to each other, and even give each other names.

There’s more, they also hunt together, are able to work with different species, and can engage in social play.

Troy Mcclure Hump GIF by Cheezburger - Find & Share on GIPHY

But the lack of opposable thumbs has stunted their progression in society. An author on the new study, Susanne Shultz, explained,

“Unfortunately, they won’t ever mimic our great metropolises and technologies because they didn’t evolve opposable thumbs,”

Can you imagine, if 100 years from now they did grow these thumbs, what they would say to us, humans? Probably something along the lines of FUCK YOU.

Marge Simpson Crowd GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Chill, imagine getting the hands from a dolphin.

This actually has me shook. Whales are huge, aerodynamic, dope at swimming, and they can hold their breath for hours.

What the fuck can humans do? Poop and destroy? Like we’re shit out of luck if these guys make landfall. I’m not going near an ocean for a while.

Men are stepping up with #IHearYou in response to women’s #MeToo

Forgetting something that has affected you emotionally is not as easy as it seems.

Being able to discuss these issues is possibly the best way to deal with your emotional or physical trauma.

Sexual harassment and assault is affecting women every day. The struggle is real, as those affected are taking to social media to voice their grim stories. The hashtag that’s rallying victims everywhere, #MeToo.

The hashtag is a movement. Women (and men) are coming out and revealing the dreadful and disgusting acts that have been done unto them. While people are unifying behind the hashtag, it’s also shedding light onto the magnitude of the issue.

Some form of sexual harassment or assault is happening every day and it’s important that we understand the gravity of it. The matter of status doesn’t matter either, as actresses and actors have voiced their experiences with sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood.

In lieu of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and assault accusations, Actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter with the rallying hashtag opening the floor for a much-needed discussion.

Peep

Although Milano rekindled the fire, the act of saying “MeToo” was started by activist Tarana Burke 10 years ago.

According to CNN, the movement began in order to help young women of color who had survived sexual abuse, assault, and exploitation.

Burke told CNN how the movement has taken on a life of its own,

“On one side, it’s a bold declarative statement that ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m not alone.’ On the other side, it’s a statement from survivor to survivor that says ‘I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I’m here for you or I get it.”

Burke continued,

“It started with young people and I quickly realized adults needed it too.  When you experience trauma and meet other people that have a similar experience, and you show empathy for each other, it creates a bond.”

#MeToo is truly a beautiful and empowering crusade

To victims everywhere, the cry to liberate your emotional trauma does not fall on deaf ears. In response to women’s revealing stories, men are responding in support with the hashtag #IHEARYOU.

The IHEARYOU hashtag is calling for men to break their silence and become an ally in the war on sexual assault. The one outcome we don’t want from the #MeToo campaign is for it to just come and go.

This shall not pass without some form of resolve. It’s important for both genders to band together.

Hearing these stories put us in the shoes of the victims of sexual harassment and assault but there needs to be a call to action. #HOWIWILLCHANGE is taking Twitter by storm and people are expressing how they will support these survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

Let’s get it! This is a revolution.

Nope!

If you see something, say something homie

Think about your daughters, wives, mothers, and women everywhere

Hopefully, these hashtag movements won’t go unheard or be forgotten. When a group of people comes together to discuss an issue, obviously something is wrong.

Let’s all make a change for the better.

Bless!

California wild fires may destroy around 15,000 weed farms

Deadly wildfires have consumed over 221,700 acres of land in California.

As of Friday, October 13, there have been 35 fatalities and 5,700 structures destroyed in the Northern California fires.

But, marijuana farmers in North California are also taking a huge L. Within those 221,700 acres, 10,000 to 15,000 of the state’s marijuana farms are at risk of burning down.

Peep the wildfire smoke from space

Parts of northern California have been ravaged by intense and fast-burning wildfires that broke out on October 8. Blazes that started on a few hundred acres around Napa Valley were fanned by strong northeasterly winds, and by October 10, the 14 fires had consumed as much as 100,000 acres of land. NASA Earth observing satellites capture images of the fires from their unique vantage point in space. States of emergency have been declared in Napa, Sonoma, Yuba, and Mendocino counties, and thousands of people were asked to evacuate. The risk of growing marijuana comes at a huge cost. None of the farmers can obtain insurance for their marijuana crops.

Why? Although farming and distributing weed within the Golden State is legal it is prohibited on a federal level.

That keeps financial institutions, like insurance companies, from protecting an industry that can possibly bring in $6.5 billion of revenue by 2020.

According to Derek Peterson, CEO of Terra Tech, farmers typically invest upward of $5 million in their facilities and as much as $3 million on growing the crop itself.

Sheesh! That’s a lot of green to be lost to the sticky icky. In an interview with CNN Money, Peterson said,

“If their facilities burn down, a lot of these people won’t be able to get any economic relief for them from an insurance claim. There’s no mechanism for recovery to repay them for their loss. It’s a tremendous risk for these people.”

The wildfires will affect those within Mendocino County, one of three points in the Emerald Triangle. The fires also threaten seven other counties which overlap the largest cannabis-producing region in the United States.

Although Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in eight counties, the impact on marijuana sales is unlikely to be affected. There are so many weed farms that are scattered throughout the state.

Ganja farmers are still shook. In order to save some of their crops, bud farmers are harvesting earlier to avoid their plants from being totally burned down or tainted with smoke.

Cannabis Cultivation Applicants will be allowed to tend to their crops under agricultural access

If you are a #Mendocino #CANNABIS CULTIVATION PERMIT APPLICANT in GOOD STANDING and your garden is in a mandatory evacuation area, you will be allowed in to tend your crop under #agriculture access. The Mendocino Ag Department has submitted a list of applicants names and addresses to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the two agencies are coordinating their efforts. Peterson explained in a CNN interview that farmers are worried, “Here comes this fire at the worst possible time for them. I have a lot of friends who are really troubled right now.”

I know East Coasters are stressing though. Hopefully, this doesn’t suck the beast coast into a dry spell vortex. Nothing is worse than canceling piff plans. To put your mind at ease, this wouldn’t be the first time marijuana farms have burned up.

Medical marijuana has been legal in California since 1996 so this wouldn’t be farmers’ first rodeo. They’ve gone through this before and they will get through it again.

Prayers go up for all of the farmers who are tending to their crops, all the families that have lost homes to the unforgiving flames, and those who have lost loved ones.

Also, a big shoutout to the 11,000 firefighters who are battling the flames on the daily. We’re thinking of y’all.

Peep the black culture artists doing the Obamas’ White House portraits

Barack Obama will officially go down in history as the most swagged out president to ever touch the Oval Office. To prove it, he’s having his portrait done by hip-hop portrait artist Kehinde Wiley.

President Obama really stepped out the box for this one. He and wife Michelle Obama have selected the first ever Black painters to do the presidential portrait. Michelle Obama will have her profile done by Baltimore-based painter Amy Sherald.

Normally, ex-presidents and their First Ladies have their portraits painted by artists commissioned by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

According to tradition, the last eight US presidents have employed 90-year old portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler.

But, the Obamas said FOH, Wiley and Sherald are too fire.

Wiley draws inspiration from classical European paintings and adds a touch of African American street culture. His style is unparalleled. The NY-based artist takes oil on canvas to another level.

Larry Flynt has a $10 million bag for anybody who can dig up impeachment dirt on Trump

Larry Flynt, the ‘Porn King’ and publisher of Hustler magazine, offered $10 million big ones to anyone who has impeachable dirt on Donald Trump. Flynt is serious.

He took out a full-page ad in an October 2017 issue of  Washington Post to prove it. The ad contains no pictures just bears a headline in bold caps that reads,

“$10 MILLION FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE IMPEACHMENT AND REMOVAL FROM OFFICE OF DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Peep the tweets and ads

Flynt displayed multiple reasons underneath the bold headline as to why Donald Dump deserves to be given the boot out of office. He discussed Trump’s conflicting business interests, his lying ways, and appointing “unqualified persons to high office.”

The ad questioned,

“Has the business of the United States been compromised to protect the business of the Trump empire? We need to flush everything out into the open.”

Not only does Flynt realize that this orange ballsack is a liar, but he sees the destruction he can bring to the world. Trump’s presidency doesn’t only affect America it affects the world. The ad states six impeachment-worthy charges.

The sixth, Trump’s huge decision to pull America out of the Paris accords, was seen by Flynt as criminal. The ad stated,

“Sabotaging the 195-nation Paris accords to save the planet from future climate cataclysm. If that is not at least a misdemeanor, the term is meaningless.”

Let’s get it, Larry Flynt!

People with power who are smart enough to realize that Trump doesn’t have the country’s best interest at heart need to take notes.

“This is not my first rodeo,” said Flynt. The outspoken porn publisher has also offered a $1 million dollar reward twice before. The first time he offered the reward to anyone who had an illicit sexual encounter with anyone who was a member of Congress or a government official.

This led to the resignation of former Speaker of the House-elect Bob Livingston and exposed Senator David Vitter’s prostitution scandal.

Back in 2012, he offered the same amount to anyone who had any information regarding Mitt Romney’s tax returns.

Neither Flynt nor the rest of Americans can take three more years of this moronic and trash bag leadership. Flynt addressed the patriotism of getting Trump out of the Oval,

“Impeachment would be a messy, contentious affair, but the alternative — three more years of destabilizing dysfunction — is worse… I feel it is my patriotic duty, and the duty of all Americans, to dump Trump before it’s too late.”

We’re hoping for something amazing Larry, bless your soul

Earth is COOKED: Warming oceans, melting ice caps and a super volcano

Mother Earth, we are sorry. Humans seem to be the most destructive species on the planet.

Can we not help our destructive ways? Our carbon emitting habits prove that. We are destroying the only planet we can call home.

This year’s hurricane season is proving itself to be one for the books. Ten consecutive storms have reached hurricane status in the Atlantic during the 2017 season. That hasn’t happened since 1893!

Peep the size of Maria compared to PR

Hurricane Maria Lashes Puerto Rico Yet again, a powerful hurricane has devastated a Caribbean island. Earlier in September, it was Barbuda, Saint Barthélemy, and the Virgin Islands that took a direct hit from Irma. On September 19, category 5 Hurricane Maria battered Dominica. Now Puerto Rico has taken its turn. While Maria weakened slightly before making landfall on September 20 in southeastern Puerto Rico, the storm’s track was a near worst-case scenario. It ripped directly across the island with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour). That made it the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the United States. The composite image above shows Maria as it was making landfall near Yabucoa. Infrared (band 4) and visible data (band 1) from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 13 (GOES-13) acquired at 6:15 a.m. local time (10:15 Universal Time) is overlaid on blue marble data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and black marble data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Now hurricane Ophelia, which is the tenth hurricane to form in the Atlantic, is raising eyebrows as it heads towards Europe. Yes, Europe.

Reindert Haarsma, a climate scientist at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, said in an interview with Newsweek,

“A number of [tropical storms] reach Europe, but usually they are weak systems. That they reach Europe with this strength, near hurricane force, is quite unusual.”

The storm won’t make landfall as a hurricane but it is said it may still pack hurricane force winds.

Will it ever stop and how will the next hurricane season greet us if the oceans keep warming? With grave catastrophe.

Especially since the leader of the free world, President Donald Dump, won’t consider global warming as a threat to humanity. He dubbed the Paris Accord.

Could you expect someone like him to know what is really good? Absolutely not. He doesn’t even know that he is president of the Virgin Islands. God help us.

Despite having only having 4 percent of the world’s population the US has contributed to one-third of the excess carbon dioxide that’s in the earth’s atmosphere. The US stands as the biggest contributor to carbon pollution in human history.

Global warming won’t only affect the climate, which will cause drought and longer and more intense heat waves. We are losing our ice caps. They are melting and appear as if they were never there.

Earth is cooking

Earth’s 2016 surface temperatures were the warmest since modern record-keeping began in 1880, according to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Globally-averaged temperatures in 2016 were 1.78 degrees Fahrenheit (0.99 degrees Celsius) warmer than the mid-20th century mean. This makes 2016 the third year in a row to set a new record for global average surface temperatures. The 2016 temperatures continue a long-term warming trend, according to analyses by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. NOAA scientists concur with the finding that 2016 was the warmest year on record based on separate, independent analyses of the data. This color-coded map displays a progression of changing global surface temperatures anomalies from 1880 through 2016. The final frame represents global temperature anomalies averaged from 2012 through 2016 in degrees Celsius. Peep the rapid melting

This will directly affect our sea levels. According to NASA,

“In the next several decades, storm surges and high tides could combine with sea level rise and land subsidence to further increase flooding in many regions.”

Do the math, rising sea levels plus supercharged hurricanes equals devastation. It seems as if all we hear on  TV is how we can donate to destroyed islands or states that were destroyed by flooding or powerful gale force winds.

The storms all gain extra power from the warming oceans. Imagine what a storm will look like 10, 20. or 30 years from now. You can expect more nations to be left in the dark and completely destroyed more often if we don’t make a change.

Puerto Rico is still suffering as they recover from back to back hurricanes. Although it is a territory of one of the most powerful nations in the world, most of PR still remains without power three weeks after Hurricane Maria hit. Maria made landfall at a category 5.

In other cooked news, there has been a huge hole the size of Maine which has opened up in Antartica in the Weddell Sea. It is fluctuating in sizes of up to 80,000 square kilometers.

That hole is big AF!

The scientific name for the hole is called a polynya. There are two kinds of polynya coastal and open-ocean.

Coastal polynya form all the time and are a result of strong winds that blow ice out of the area. Open-ocean, on the other hand, forms because of rising of warmer and saltier water from below. The hole that is there now is open-ocean polynya.

This has happened before, 40 years ago. The hole back then was actually bigger – 250,000 square kilometers. Scientists don’t know why this phenomenon occurs and Kent Moore, professor of physics at the University of Toronto, told CBS, “It’s like an enigma on many levels.”

Although it is still too “premature” to blame the massive hole on global warming it definitely should be of concern as the ocean’s temperatures rise. Could we possibly see more of these holes appear in the Antarctic?

Antartica is undergoing drastic changes. The Washington Post reported an iceberg twice the size of Paris broke off the Pine Island Glacier. According to a recent study, warming oceans are undermining the importance of the floating ice shelf in West Antarctica.

Damnnn, Ice Scientists are Shook AF!

Pine Island Glacier Births New ‘Berg A new #iceberg recently calved from Pine Island Glacier—one of the main outlets where ice from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet flows into the ocean. On September 21, 2017, a rift was clearly visible across the center of the glacier’s floating ice shelf. The break ultimately produced iceberg B-44, visible in radar imagery captured on September 23 by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellite. On September 28, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the #Landsat 8 captured this natural-color image. The new iceberg, afloat in the Amundsen Sea, has an area of about 185 square kilometers (72 square miles). That’s larger than the pieces that broke away in January 2017, but smaller than the 583-square-kilometer berg that broke loose in July 2015 and the 700-square-kilometer berg in November 2013. Loss of ice from this glacier’s floating ice tongue is not new. Changes in the calving front have been well-documented in satellite imagery since at least 1973 (captured early that year with the Landsat Multispectral Scanner) and studied in detail. As the front of Pine Island retreats upstream, it has the potential to change the flow of the entire system. When ice is in contact with a neighboring ice shelf or the sides a fjord, it can buttress or hold back the ice behind it. If a glacier loses that connection through thinning, rifting, and retreat, inland ice can flow more freely. According to NASA glaciologist Kelly Brunt, the September 2017 event may not immediately affect the flow of Pine Island Glacier because the ice that calved was already disconnected from much of the system. “This iceberg was the last bit of ice to calve off that was not ‘holding on’ to the sides of the embayment,” Brunt said. Now that B-44 has calved, all of the ice remaining in Pine Island Glacier appears well connected to its margins. The huge stresses along the glacier’s sides—the so-called “shear margins”—are evident in the series of rifts and crevasses along the glacier’s edges and on the iceberg. “If another event happens fairly soon, that could have a more measurable impact on the flow of the system,” Brunt said. https://go.nasa.gov/2xPafAo

Moving on to matters that are out of our hands. This cooked situation involves a supervolcano threatening life as we know it.

The supervolcano, which lies secretly under Yellowstone park, is expected to blow sooner than expected. Researchers believe it could erupt within the next few decades.

We weren’t supposed to have to worry. Scientists thought we had thousands of years until the next major supervolcanic eruption. Nope, scientists say that there is potential for an eruption as early as the 2030s.

The Yellowstone supervolcano had an eruption 631,000 years ago. The magma pocket refilled quicker than expected. Once it explodes expect what scientists are calling a volcanic winter.

National Geographic reported that large amounts of ash and pulverized rock from the eruption will get lofted into the atmosphere and then fall back slowly to Earth.

Also, volcanic material and gases that linger in the atmosphere will block sunlight, resulting in a global temperature decrease.

According to analysis team scientist James Farrell of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in an interview with National Geographic,

“You’ll get ashfall as far away as the Great Plains, and even farther east.”

NASA believes the Yellowstone supervolcano is a greater threat to life on Earth than any asteroid.

Underneath Yellowstone Park lies a monster

No you are not looking into a giant eye or the heart of the sun. Instead you are looking at an aerial photo of the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone. If you look closely you can see the tiny people on the boardwalk in the top-left of the photo. Why you ask are we showing you this particular photo?! Well Yellowstone has been in the news a lot lately because it sits on top of a super volcano that will erupt at some point (I wonder if Vegas has odds on this?) in the geological future and dump 1000 cubic kms of volcano guts all over the Continental US. So, with that cheery news (it really is a beautiful photo) a shoutout to amazing photographer @timmchapmanphotography and the gang over at @500px . . . . . . #grandprismaticspring #yellowstone #supervolcano #hotspring #retina #wyoming #lava #minerals #travel #caldera #yellowstonenationalpark #yellowstonecaldera #stockphotography #stockphoto #travel #deathtostock #magmachamber #nature #naturalphenomenon #tinypeople #aerialview #aerial #fromabove #helicopterphotography #armageddon

Speaking of asteroids, one almost collided with our beloved planet on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. The asteroid is said to have whizzed by earth back in 2012 and came twice as close this year at an altitude of 27,300 miles.

That’s only a few thousand miles above where geosynchronous satellites chill. Every time Asteroid 2012 TC4 passes earth it’s affected by our planet’s gravitational pull. This makes it possible for it to eventually impact the earth.

The next time Asteroid 2012 TC4 is expected to pass again is in 2050. Scientists say that we’ll get lucky that year. The year we have to watch out for is 2079.

Rüdiger Jehn of the European Space Agency told AFP,

“We know today that it will also not hit the Earth in the year 2050, but the close flyby in 2050 might deflect the asteroid such that it could hit the Earth in the year 2079,”

The odds of an impact that year 1 out of 750. Sheesh, that’s only 62 years from now.

Peep the close call

Since we are on the topic of huge objects hurtling towards our planet, let’s discuss the out-of-control Chinese space station that is. The Tiangong-1, “Heavenly Palace 1,” which weighs 9.4 tons has fallen 185 miles in altitude.

The “Heavenly Palace 1” has been slowly making a decline and hurtling out of control towards earth for a year now. The big question is should we be shook? Yes and no.

The chances of space material actually hitting is highly unlikely, but still, you might be that dude to catch an antenna in his dome piece.

According to astrophysicist, Jonathan McDowell, in an interview with The Guardian, “chunks weighing more than 200 pounds could make an impact on Earth.”

Predictions have been made that the space station will crash to Earth somewhere between October 2017 and April 2018.

If you’re scared you can track the satellite here.

This will soon hit Earth… watch out #Tiangong1

Looking on the bright side of life, scientists have discovered plastic eating worms that could possibly help save our planet.

Wax moth larvae, which are commonly used for fish bait, were found eating plastic. But how? There’s a reason why the little buggers are used for fish bait, they drive beekeepers crazy.

In the wild, you would find them in a beehive eating away at beeswax. According to the Guardian, a family of them made into Federica Bertocchini’s crib. Upon finding them in one of her hives she put the gang of caterpillars into a plastic bag.

The little fuckers ate their way out. “I went back to the room where I had left the worms and I found that they were everywhere,” she said. “The bag was full of holes.”

They are really eating the plastic. Lab tests conducted by the Spanish National Research Council and scientists at Cambridge University proved that 100 worms can devour 92 milligrams of polyethylene in as little as 12 hours.

Scientists are now trying to figure out if the worms are eating the plastic to escape or as a source of energy.
