As government shutdown looms, Trump wastes time on stupid ass ‘Fake News Awards’
Yesterday, our very dumb country got even dumber when the GOP released Donald Trump’s “Fake News Awards,” given to publications that reported news that Trump didn’t like.
The awards were a bit of a letdown as Trump handed out the honors to old adversaries like The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post, and TIME.
But the issue here is that most of the awards were already retracted stories, some were just tweets by reporters who quickly fixed their reporting, and one was an opinion article… obviously by Paul Krugman (my dad loves your shit).
The Washington Post fact-checked Trump’s Fake News Awards, and analyzed Trump’s inclusion of Krugman’s op-ed:
“Krugman, of course, is a columnist. So it’s a bit odd to feature an opinion as fake news when it’s not really news, just opinion. (We don’t fact-check opinions at The Fact Checker.) Krugman wrote: ‘We are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight. I suppose we could get lucky somehow. But on economics, as on everything else, a terrible thing has just happened.'”

The Post further broke down the Fake News winners, writing that the fact that all of these reports were retracted and even resulted in suspensions from the journalists who made false reports:
“To sum up, at least eight of the ‘Fake News’ winners resulted in corrections, with two reports prompting suspensions or resignations. Two of the winners were simply tweets that were quickly corrected and never resulted in news articles. One was an opinion article in which the author later retracted his prediction.”
It’s really cool to see the political party controlling the legislative future of our country partake in giving Fake News awards to journalists who are just doing their jobs.
It’s not like we’re on the verge of a government shutdown and the GOP should be spending their time, like, trying to improve the general shittiness of our country… big shoutout to Paul Ryan, what a guy he is.
