‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ movie is coming to the big screen in 2019

Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the Nickelodeon series that fucked up everyone’s childhoods, is coming back in 2019, this time as a feature film, according to Variety.

Paramount announced the project last month as part of a new branch of the studio Paramount Players, which, “focuses on contemporary talent and properties for young audiences while drawing upon the vast resources of the Viacom brands,” reports Variety.

Gary Dauberman, one of the writers on this summer’s hit horror film It, has been tapped up to write the script.

The show, which drew inspiration from The Twilight Zone, began every episode with a new story being “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society.” Those words alone are surely enough to send goosebumps up any 90s kid’s spine.

Dauberman referenced the Midnight Society in a statement about the new film, promising to honor the show but bringing a more contemporary spin. The writer said of Are You Afraid of the Dark?:

“The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.”

The film is slated for October 11, 2019, so you have some time to get over your traumatic experiences with the Nickelodeon show and get ready to experience Are You Afraid of the Dark? on the big screen.
